I don't have any special information from GMAC, but I can 100% guarantee that they won't adjust the scoring algorithm depending on your section order. And I'd be shocked if they ever change the order back to the way it was. That's actually why GMAC ran a test of the "select section order" privilege a few months back: they wanted to prove that it won't bias or invalidate scores in any way.

So if they're offering this privilege, they're confident that there will be no reason to remove it anytime soon. Sure, tests get redesigned from time to time, but I'd bet anything that this change is here to stay. Especially since the GMAT is competing with the GRE for market share. Both companies keep giving us new tools and toys.

And for whatever it's worth, I don't think that the score inflation will be all that large from this. I think verbal scores will go up a little bit on average, since fatigue probably only plays a role on that section, and maybe AWA and IR scores will drop a little bit. But most people are fresh enough for quant, and I'd be surprised if anything really changes there -- other than the fact that quant scores just keep rising and rising, anyway. I blame [b]Bunuel for that! :D[/b]
I have to agree on this one. Bunuel solutions help many people get higher quant score. :-D

It's a (re)branding exercise. There is absolutely no other change, either in the questions or in the algorithm.

Well, the whole of GMATPrep will be transitioned to an online platform in Q1 2018 (they'll allow software downloads for a little while longer) :)

So we shouldn't expect too much from the current software. It seems that they're putting most of their development focus online. Hopefully updating a web service will be much easier, so that should be good going forward (still a long way away though).

One good feature they're planning to introduce is a way for others to see someone's performance on the GMATPrep software. This could be really helpful if a test taker wants to get help with analysis/concepts.

FYI - Veritas Prep has updated their tests to reflect the new options available for "Select Section Order" on the GMAT.

As to the "Advanced OG", GMAC this morning on the webinar said it will take a while as they are searching and looking for questions to include. It appears they have only so many questions to access for public release, esp the harder ones so I would not hold your breath per se for anything amazing... not based on the expectations they have set. Definitely nothing in 2017.

It does seem like a bit odd timing but the timing is never perfect... it would have been nice I guess to have an announcement a few months in advance and have everyone informed about the options and let people try with GMAT prep to see if they prefer one way or another - that would be more ideal BUT, it is a benefit they are rolling out, so complaining about something that is being improved and for free, is not in order.

Nobody has to prep for anything, you can take the GMAT the same way everyone has been taking it for 5 years, ever since the IR introduction. So technically, this is a minor item, but naturally many may try to take advantage of it and it may not be convenient for everyone, esp. those taking the GMAT soon, so they have to choose how much they care about this change.

One thing GMAC did mention on the call was that some people have clearly scored LOWER on the test, in part because they were coming in cold without AWA/IR to "warm" them up, so something to keep in mind as you devise your strategy!

I don't think scores will generally be much higher next year. Maybe a bit, but you're absolutely right that this could make a big difference to those who struggle with stamina/concentration issues. I hope they'll also release some data on which order proves to be the most popular.

Hi fitzpratik ,

Unlike GRE, GMAT Quant and Verbal sections are independent of each other. There is no link between the two.

So, your performance on each section is independent of the other.

Disagreed that the test became more difficult post July 11. I think most people here are forgetting that the GMATPrep Tests have a limited quantity of 700+ level questions — if you're consistently doing well on the practice verbal questions then the difficulty of questions seems to plateau and drop back down to the 600s. That's been my experience in any case.

On the other hand, there's no scarcity of difficult questions on the actual exam. You'll never run out of 700+ level questions and thus the entire section seems more mentally-taxing than the practice exams. For this same reason, I've read supporting examples by others that GMATPrep scores tend to be slightly inflated by 10 to 30 points if you're in the top 95%ile range.

I opted for Q-V-IR-AWA order and the test seemed very similar to all the practice exams. I didn't necessarily feel drained by the time I got to IR/AWA, but rather I felt anxious to rush through those sections to get my final score. Ended up with an IR 8 & AWA 5.5 for reference.

I took the exam for the first time this weekend with section order selection and went quant to verbal to IR/AWA. Scored 770 (50/44/8) so it's definitely not the case that they weren't giving hard enough questions to achieve a high score, although I cannot compare it to past official tests.

I used almost exclusively Manhattan gmat stuff to prep, which was significantly harder on quant than the real test. Just studied hard every day for a month and honestly felt more than ready at that point. My highest practice test quant score on Mgmat was 47 but I was getting almost every official guide question right that I tried. The section guides were also very helpful for truly understanding the concepts. I think getting used to the timing of harder questions that mgmat throws at you consistently and ultimately understanding how to get many of them right paid off big time. I would not have been nearly this prepared if I focused more on OG problems.

Hi Everyone,

I took the gmat today and scored a 670 (Q47 V35). The order was V Q IR AWA. I have taken the exam earlier and the level of questions seemed no different. Although my score is a slight departure from my GmatPrep mocks from exam pack 1 (700 and 690), I'm almost sure of the sections or subsections I didn't do as well on.

I'll be ordering the ESR. To reiterate, the exam has NOT changed!

If anyone has any questions about how and where the order selection pops up, etc., I'd be happy to answer.

Edit (after receiving ESR): The ESR confirms what I was suspecting.

- Math breakup shows that I did better on DS than on PS. Usually this is the opposite for me, but overall my score was the same as my last GMATPrep mock.
- In verbal, my ESR breakup (CR:31, SC:34, RC:51) is almost exactly similar to my GMATPrep mock (CR:40, SC:33, RC:51), the exception being CR which caused the drop from my usual V38 to V35.

Is this a good thing or bad thing? I always felt that the IR section drained me...I have performed better on mock CATS whenever I have taken the test without the IR and essay section. By tackling the main sections first, I feel I will be in a better position. Quant isn't a strength for me anyway, so tackling it first would relieve me. bb would request your thoughts on this new feature.
Also does this also mean that GMAC will make the test content even more difficult, since it is giving us this flexibility? :shock:

Interesting changes... I recently started studying for my GMAT again and plan to take it later this summer.

I'm wondering if any prep companies will introduce timely changes to their practice CATs to allow for this new flexibility for candidates preparing for GMAT right now. :problem:

Good to know that the official practice tests on mba. com will be updated soon, but July 31st for the update seems too far. Hope something comes up sooner.
