Hey guys
Took the test yesterday and still can't really sleep cause I did so bad. Pretty much failed. I got a 430. Don't even know where my little paper print out is cause I was so pissed.
A little about me, Name is David. I will be graduating from VCU undergrad in the financial technology program next month. I was a pre-pharm major before I got into business. My in-major GPA is 3.15 (i know i'm not a genuis like some of you guys) and my overall is worse because I couldn't handle chemistry or biology freshman and sophmore year when I was in the medical track (i think it's around 2.7ish...again not good). I hope grad school will focus more of their attention on my in-major rather than overall since biology and chemistry really isn't my cup of tea, and pre-pharm is no longer my major. This is, of course after I re-cooperate, study more, and retake my GMAT's again.
Ok on with the rest....
So this score pretty much ruined my plans for applying to any grad schools for the fall 2010 applications since most deadlines are going to end very soon (VCU's MSF program and the W&M MBA program). Yes, I'm only applying to two schools in-state to Virginia because out-of state is pretty expensive since I'm only 23 and need to work to pay for school etc etc...I may consider other schools though at a later date when my GMAT score is sufficient enough. I tried to really gauge myself and consider what schools I would be able to even have a chance to get in consideration of my GPA. Man...if I could turn back the hands of time I would have really turned myself away from the medical department
I really hope they focus more on my in-major (please please). Therefore, my only option is to really plan to take it for the spring 2011 admissions, which is 7 months away (hopefully I can make a come back?)
Time spent studying:
approximately 3 months. On and off really because I'm currently in my senior year and there's so much going on. It's just been really hectic.
Materials:
Princeton Review: Cracking the GMAT 2010 Edition
2010 McGraw-Hill's GMAT.
What went wrong:
So my target score is really about 550-600 range. I wasn't really looking to go to harvard or anything of that nature granted that I am really not the brightest crayon in the box. Never have been. Got a 1330 on SAT's when it was still out of 1600. And what seemed to me was that the Princeton Review was pretty easy. On the verbal I would get approximately 9-12 wrong everytime and on the math I would get approximately 8 wrong. Most of them were towards the end and middle section. What what really tripped me up was that there was no grading scale in the book so I kind of had to go off what I felt, and although I knew it wasn't perfect I took into consideration that some weren't counted and scored.
The McGraw-Hill's book I averaged a bit lower, hence I guess it was a bit harder? I think I had like maybe 11-14 wrong on the math and then 13-16 on the verbal. Again, most towards the end where I guess I was tired or something. Practiced this for a while. Some of the explanations for wrong answers I found in the back didn't really make sense to what they were trying to teach me in the front of the book.
Anyways, I need help. Bad. I got a pretty decent resume, worked for Best Buy Geek Squad and Management Supervisor for quite some time in 2005-2008 (when the crisis was nearing and was laid off) so I definitely have some experience with how business works and whatnot. I got some really good letters of recommendation from top folks at my university who can vouch I work hard even though for some reason the academic scores don't really reflect that.
And I found this site via youtube actually. So I checked it out and looks to be VERY helpful. I really wished I found this before I took the exam. Also I just noticed that the GMAT folks gave you 2 free practice tests that I had no idea about which really would have been beneficial to me. Sorry I'm a slow learner. But in any event, this website is definitely going to help and I will definitely be sticking around more on here than on my usual forum which is vwvortex primarily for vw/audi and german auto enthusiasts. If any of you guys want technical help with VW/Audi let me know, I wasn't even going to go college originally and just go to UTI tech and be a mechanic. Been working on these cars since high school, took all the intro mechanic classes so I've been working on these things for a while
I will probably be off today to purchase some more text material from Border's so I just need a jump start I guess on what materials are good and whatnot. Thanks appreciate it. I know this has been long passage. I also have a friend that graduated with me from my university except he's in economics and is facing similar problems on the GMAT so it would really be beneficial to at least be pointed in the right direction of what texts were most helpful and where to start. Thanks guys. I'll be sticking around for sure
