Let me explain the difference between A and E.
Ok. So here it is!
Let's see option E and check why is it incorrect.
It says: Books in European libraries last longer than books in libraries in the United States because the climate in Europe is fairly humid, but libraries there are not subjected to the extremities of temperature and humidity such as those that
It means that the books in european libraries last longer because European climate is humid.
It changes the meaning of our sentence. Our sentence wanted to convey that Even though the climate is humid in Europe is humid, the books are not damaged because of X reason.
So due to meaning distortion, E is wrong.

I love the enthusiasm, akshayk and Madhavi1990! The GMAT is a whole lot more fun if you can find ways to enjoy the questions.

I agree that "because" and "although" sound kind of awkward when they're right next to each other like this. But "sounding awkward" really isn't a crime. (I'd argue that TONS of correct answers on the GMAT sound horrible, but that's a separate rant for another day. )

Here's what's going on in this case: the "because" and "although" are serving totally different functions. If we remove the phrase beginning with "although", it would be fine, right?

Books in European libraries last longer than books in libraries in the United States because... libraries there are not subjected to the extremes of temperature and humidity that damage collections in the United States.

No problem: the phrase starting with "because" just explains why books last longer in European libraries.

So what's the "although" doing? Just modifying the phrase that follows it. If we strip out the beginning of the sentence, it's a little bit easier to see how it works:

...although the climate in Europe is fairly humid, libraries there are not subjected to the extremes of temperature and humidity that damage collections in the United States.

So both the "because" and "although" phrases have nice, clear functions in the sentence. They just sound odd when they're right next to each other. But again: "sounding odd" isn't something you should ever worry about.

C - "humidity as" damage is awkward..
E - 'such as' is used to quote examples - here its used to compare...

So ans is A.

The biggest problem of E is that it says that the books in Europe last longer because the climate in Europe is humid; - precisely the opposite of what the prompt wants to say that the books last longer in Europe in spite of the humid climate there.
Therefore, E just has no chance

"subject of" is wrong...correct idiom is "subject to"

A. because, although the climate in Europe is fairly humid, libraries there are not subjected to the extremes of temperature and humidity that Ok - Sentence is grammatically correct. I tested for an illogical modifier or fragment, but everything checked out.

B. because, although the climate in Europe is fairly humid, libraries there are not subject of the extremes of temperature and humidity as those that "As those that" is not necessary. Furthermore, "those" takes the last noun "libraries", making an illogical comparison.

C. because, although the climate in Europe is fairly humid, libraries there are not subjected to the extremities of temperature and humidity as extremities is a different word from extreme. Even if it were a word, the extremities would make the sentence illogical -- were there multiple extremes? How can there be?

D. because the climate in Europe is fairly humid, but still libraries there are not subject of the extremes of temperature and humidity as "but still" is not idiomatic but redundant; "but still" also creates an unnecessary contrast (even on the wrong clause). "As" is interchangeable.

E. because the climate in Europe is fairly humid, but libraries there are not subjected to the extremities of temperature and humidity such as those that "but" creates a contrast on the wrong clause. "such as those that" doesn't make any sense.

"Those" is a plural pronoun, and whenever you see any plural pronoun, you'll want to look for plural nouns that it can refer back to. In this case, the closest option is "extremes of temperature and humidity."

So that gives us: "although the climate in Europe is fairly humid, libraries there are not subject of the extremes of temperature and humidity as the extremes of temperature and humidity that damage collections in the United States." So the pronoun seems just fine in this case.

This is fine. Connecting words can be placed in many places around the sentence. The only hard-and-fast rule about connectors is that N clauses must have N-1 connecting words. In this case, we have three clauses (Books....last, the climate is, libraries...are not), and two connecting words (Although, Because), so the numbers are correct.

Hello, rocky620. You seem to have outlined a perfect paradox. Perhaps you are interpreting grammatical conventions too rigidly, though. I think there is a third case that you have not considered here. The word extremes on its own is unqualified: not subjected to the extremes that... What kinds of extremes would the sentence be talking about? We need an object of a preposition to tell us: extremes of temperature and humidity. Now, on their own, these two would not convey as strong a message: not subjected to the temperature and humidity that... Does this mean that the temperature and humidity need to be identical in the two places for damage to occur? Although this spinoff could at least function as a sentence, it lacks the emphasis and preciseness of the original, and this brings me to that third interpretation: that can be thought to modify the entire phrase the extremes of temperature and humidity. There is no need to separate the two parts, and now the reader understands that the highs and lows of temperature and humidity, perhaps, or just the highs or lows of two separate metrics, form the basis of the comparison. Is it a grammatical crime for that to modify a phrase? No, not at all. (And I would be wary of that touch "rule," too. It may help in some questions, but dig deep enough into official questions, and you will find exceptions.)

As always, look for easy targets first. It is okay to have doubts. I count them up myself sometimes in harder questions. But I am careful not to toss an answer aside simply because I am uncertain.

Hello, zoezhuyan. How about we take a look at the original sentence and answer choices (B) and (C) to see what we can tease out?



We have three splits we can talk about here.

1. subjected to/subject of—No case can be made for the latter without an article ahead of subject. That is, you could say that something was the subject of a painting or a novel, but not just subject of. The latter option is unidiomatic, so we could eliminate (B) already.

2. the extremes/the extremities—Again, the latter option loses out. Extremes of temperature are its highs and lows, but extremities are more like the ends of some physical entity. We call our fingers and toes our extremities, and it is acceptable to say that the poles of the Earth are its extremities, but I cannot reach out and touch temperature. In this case, (C) can be eliminated.

3. that/as those that/as—A three-way split is interesting, but two of the options do not work. Test:

A) extremes that damage collections √
B) extremes as those that damage collections X (We would need the idiomatic construct as _____ as for the presence of the comparative as to be justified.)
C) extremes as damage collections X (This one is even harder to find a context that allows it to work. I am not up to the task.)

So, to answer your question, yes, you can eliminate (B) and (C) on the basis of as. Just appreciate that you can also eliminate either option by some other means. Anything you can use against an answer choice should be considered, after all.

In the above fragment, the Mojave desert is provided as a single example of a category of things (all low humidity)

In the sentence as it's written, the temperature extremes that damage books aren't one example from a groups of extremes in temperature. Rather, the extremes that damage book are the ONLY extremes we are concerned with. Therefore, indicating that those extremes are one example from a category with the words 'such as' is illogical and incorrect.

I finally understand why it cannot be E - the sentence is fine till we see the end 'those that' (two pronouns) - so the sentence would read "books in ...last longer.......than books in .....US because the climate in Europe is fairly humid, but libraries there are not subjected to the extremities of temperature and humidity such as those that" - last bit not fitting damage collections in the United States.
We are talking about " the extremes of temperature and humidity that[/u] damage collections" - so that last bit makes sense in A, while the others have weird sentences or E, which has two pronouns ('those that damage collections').

My initial reaction was to strike it due to 'because, although', which usually is not used to together - but here all other options distort meaning (that extremes damage collections)

a. If that is referring to "temperature and humidity", are we saying that the "temperature and humidity that do not damage books in EU libraries, are (the same) responsible for damaging books in US. Should it not be "as those that"

b. If "that" is referring to "extremes" is not flouting the touch rule. But as per the sentence's requirement this reference is correct.

Both of them will make sense, but in one case it needs to be corrected to logically draw the correct meaning, and in other we need to overrule the rule.
