" such that" not " such+noun +that" never exist in formal english. D is gone.

(A) and he earned them at a time when aviation was still so new for many of the planes he flew to be
1) An idiomatic error: "SO + ADJ + THAT + CLAUSE" is the correct idiom. Hence, there should be "so new that many of the planes he flew were...".
I don't see any problem other than that mentioned above: "them" clearly refers to "sixteen official international speed records". the second clause after "and" seems ok to me since it has a clear relationship with the first one.

(B) earning them at a time that aviation was still so new for many of the planes he flew were

1) "comma + earning" is a obvious error: "comma + V_ing" usually modifies the nearest action and its agent, delineating simultaneity, immediate consuquence and son on.So, "earning" is wrong because only after he finished earning or achieve ALL sixteen speed records, he could hold them.

2) "at a time that": "when" works better with time than does "that"

3) The idiom, "SO + ADJ + THAT + CLAUSE", is used incorrectly

(C) earning these at a time where aviation was still so new that many of the planes he flew were

1) "comma + earning" is wrong.

2) "these at a time where": "these" can not be used as a pronoun although some O.G. questions have used it thus.

3) "at a time where": "where" can not refer ti time

(D) earned at a time in which aviation was still so new such that many of the planes he flew were

1) the only problem I can see is with "so new such that": "such" is redundant.

(E) earned at a time when aviation was still so new that many of the planes he flew were[/quote]

1) "earned" is used here as a modifier,"comma + V_ed". this modifier usually modifies some noun in the preciding clause. Here, it modifies " sixteen official international speed records".

2) "so + adj+that+clause" is used correctly

Hi EducationAisle,

WHEN is used to denote a specific time .
Eg: In 2013 when USA made another high tech fighter plane , Russia did another nuclear experiment .

Whereas in OPTION E:
(E) earned at a time when aviation was still so new that many of the planes he flew were

This time can be a range not a specific time. So how the usage of WHEN is correct ?

When can be used for a range as well...

When British ruled India, India's economy suffered significantly.
