I think E can be possible.
because hippos might now have a reputation that they are setentary. and this behavior mentioned in the passage is a preference that have contributed to their reputation.

Reputation to is incorrect --> So, eliminate C and E
Which seems ambiguous or even refers to "themselves" is illogical meaning ---> Eliminate A,B

Since this is the reputation of hippos in general that the question stem is talking about, simple present tense must be used.

So any option with past tense (Contributed) goes out. A,C,E are out

Hippo's is plural so Their>Its

Can someone explain the official answer,
D says "that might" . it is a prediction , however the image of hippos for being relatively sluggish and sedentary has been continuing from past.
The answer according to me should have "have" in it

Hippos are suggish- Accepted fact.

Hippos like cooling in water- another fact. This habit might contribute to Hippos' reputation.

Here , might is not a prediction, its a probable explanation on why hippos are considered sluggish

By day, hippos enjoy bathing in water to cool themselves down, which might have contributed to their reputation for being relatively sluggish and sedentary.

(A) which might have contributed to their reputation for being --> usage of "which" is wrong to refer to an action

(B) which might contribute to its reputation for being --> same as A

(C) and this might have contributed to their reputation to be --> this can't be used to refer to an action

(D) a preference that might contribute to their reputation for being --> correct

(E) a preference which might have contributed to their reputation to be

Shouldn't there be a "have" before contributed in D?

I have a doubt in option D, the OA... hippos are slugish, it is a general fact, not like they are temporarily sluggish, then is not the use of being wrong here??
I understand that being can be used only when something temporary is to be indicated.

Tamal

What’s wrong with “which”? And “Have contributed” in option E?
