E is incorrect because of "that"
B is wrong because "with" indicates a purpose and intention, "to" or another correct idiom "used to" should be placed in the sentence.
"to" in B is not properly used; it should be "for enhancing", but here, we need "to" => B is wrong

Hello y'all,

I've a question, why isn't C wrong
C. Employing the same techniques used to genetically enhance plants so that they are

Ignoring the ambiguity of the pronoun "they", one big question arises that what is "used" a verb doing by it self in the phrase which later modifies researchers. any help would be appreciated.

in A, "by..." and "making..." are both modifiers. 2 modifier never stand side by side because they can not modify each other. they need a noun modified, which is in between.

in B, "so that" must be preceded by a clause not a preposition phrase.

in D, "which" as not logic referent because "makes" is singular.

in E, 'that" refers to "plants" before to " technics".

C is correct answer here.

What is wrong with A and B?
Can someone help

A. By the same techniques used for genetically enhancing plants, making them disease- or pest-resistant, researchers have been able to increase the amount of protein in potatoes, sweet potatoes, and tobacco.

By making them here is modifying plant instead of Researchers , hence incorrect.

B. With the same techniques to genetically enhance plants, so that they are disease- or pest-resistant, researchers have been able to increase the amount of protein in potatoes, sweet potatoes, and tobacco.

Use of split infinitive is nover correct in GMAT

Hence (C) is the best

what is split infinitive ? please explain.

The correct answer is certainly choice C.

Choice E changes the meaning. With "for" it sounds as though we are using some kind of techniques on genetically enhanced plants; but not necessarily the techniques that caused those genetic enhancements in the first place. That is, it sounds like this: "by using techniques for [this type of plant]".

Choice D also changes the meaning. We need the "used to".

There is no split infinitive error in choice C:

The ninja used his speed TO SWIFTLY KICK his opponent.
Company X used a tax schme TO SUSPICIOUSLY EVADE debts.
Sara used the OG TO QUICKLY LEARN the CR question types.

this is good idea. choice e mean "enhancing " modifies "plant". and so, is , incorrect.

This is one of those things that small things aggregate to create a unfavorable choice.

1) "techniques used for enhancing plants" sounds better "than techniques for enhancing plants".

2) Nitpick: that is modifying techniques..instead of plants but that is more close to plants, making this construction undesirable.

3) SUPER-Nitpick: the pronoun them can have two antecedents: techniques/plants, although it's quite freaking obvious that the antecedent is plants. Techniques cannot be infected with disease...(unless you're in a toxic corporate environment. :D)

Notice (C) only has problem number (2) and not 1 and 3, therefore it is the better choice. This is why these questions are hard, because they test you on these ridiculously subtlety instead of straight out eye-gauging errors. Do I like it? Nope, but to be good, you need to learn to recognize these nuances.
