Calculating the score based on the difficulty level of a question

Guys,
Lets assume that I have 31 questions such that 5 questions are of 500 level, 16 questions are of 600 level and 10 questions are of 700 level!
Now, how many points shall I allot to each difficulty level such that I am able to calculate my score out of 60 like gmat does? (just approx. idea, ofcourse)

I guess the question relevant to this would be: How many 700 level questions does a 99% percentile face?

I am thinking about using this formulae below:
0.6 points for every 500 level Question.
1.0 points for every 600 level Question.
3 points for every 700 level Question.
Ofcourse, 3 * 31 = 93 so If you were to answer 12 level 700 questions correct then you get 36 points; add to that 10 points for getting 10 level 600 questions correct and 3 points for getting 5 level 500 questions correct. And we get a total score of 49 out of 51. So a much harder test than the original GMAT one.
What do you guys think? Any suggestions? Any modifications you recommend?

You'll really be calculating your score out of 51. There are no section scores above 51 on the GMAT. The fact that "out of 60" is mentioned is the result of a bizarre thing the GMAC has done that doesn't make sense.

Regarding how to calculate your score, the GMAT doesn't just allocate points for the questions. Rather it gauges your skill level by considering what you answer correctly. So , for instance, if you miss some medium questions, you don't just fail to get points. Rather, the test decides that your skills are such that you couldn't get those questions correct. So, the test is gauging skill level rather than simply awarding points.

That said, I can give you a way to approximate your score, but I'd need to know your score goal.

Yea, I know that but there are so many test prep companies out there offering mocks? I don't think enough people give their mocks for them to be able to use user stats for managing their score metrics. The more likely scenario is that they allot a certain number of points to each difficulty level. So for eg, lets say you get 5 questions of 700 level and 3 questions of 600 level right then your score gets to 5*(700 level point) + 3*(600 level point) and such.
Your score, even on the gmat, largely depends on how many 700 level questions you get right. if you get one wrong, even gmat just bumps you down to a medium and then if you get the medium one right then it bumps you back up to high, etc.
So I think there should be a way to approximate a score, I just don't have enough knowledge about the test to be able to figure out how to do it.
Just guesswork, we could be miles off and it would be fine. We don't have to be perfect.

They say that section scores range from 0 to 60 even though they don't. They actually range from 6 to 51. To me, publishing information that isn't correct is bizarre.

They may have an idea that section scores may one day go to 60, but since they don't today, that information is false.


The better test prep company tests do more than just award points. They work similarly to how the actual GMAT works.


If you want to approximate scoring 700 to 800, don't use any easy questions. You won't see any easy questions if you are scoring high. Use just medium and hard quesstions.

You could create sets of half medium questions and half hard questions.

Then, for quant, if you get all the medium questions correct and no hard questions maybe you could give yourself Q45. You could work from that point out to estimate other scores. For instance, all medium correct and 3 hard correct would be Q48.

For verbal, if you get 90 percent of the medium questions correct and 60 percent of the hard questions correct, you're at V38. Then you can work from there to estimate other scores.

so for verbal, it's harder to get the top score even with a bigger percentage of hard questions correct in comparison to quant. Interesting!
for verbal, what percentage of questions would you recommend getting right for me to get a score of V51? Because I only wanna practice for V51, maybe then I might get V51 or V50 or V49 on the main.

For a V51, you cannot get a single counted question incorrect. Even for a V48, for example, you can only get 1 counted question incorrect.

What you really should do is use the streaks method. Shoot for streaks of 40 verbal questions correct in a row until you consistently achieve such streaks.
