FROM The Consortium Admissions Blog: Consortium partners with Net Impact to broaden student access |
The Consortium has partnered with a nonprofit organization noted for helping students and professionals apply their skills to drive change in the world, as well as their careers. The partnership with Net Impact, effective immediately, will expose MBA prospects, students and alumni from The Consortium to the organization’s work, while also showing the opportunities through The Consortium that may be available to Net Impact’s student contacts. “Given what they stand for and their mission, I knew it would be a great chance to get exposure to their students,” said Danni Young, director of recruiting for The Consortium. ![]() The partnership will provide Consortium access to the Net Impact conference in Nov. 5-7 in Seattle. The Consortium will be present throughout and host a panel discussion during the conference. “To drive truly transformational impact, the future of our movement must be interdisciplinary, global, cross-sector, and inclusive,” said Paula Luu, Net Impact’s senior manager, community outreach and engagement. “Partnerships like the one we have with the Consortium are important as we continue to build a network that is racially diverse, socio-economically diverse, international, and cross-disciplinary. We believe that’s the only way to be truly transformational.” As part of the agreement, The Consortium will promote the Net Impact conference to its database of prospects, students and alumni, and they will offer a guest blog post to The Consortium’s site. Net Impact will also be present for The Consortium’s annual Orientation Program & Career Forum in St. Louis June 5-10, 2016. Young said the partners also expect to host a joint webinar “about social or environmental topics related to business. It will probably target our current students and prospects.” “We’re dealing with business students, and especially in this day and age, these students are interested in having a social and environmental impact in their communities,” Young said. “We’re looking for students who have experience in their communities in diversity and social justice. There is overlap with students who have the same kinds of interests from a social and environmental perspective.” The post Consortium partners with Net Impact to broaden student access appeared first on The Consortium. |
FROM The Consortium Admissions Blog: Consortium tests new format for MBA prep workshop |
For the second year running, The Consortium has tested a new format for its popular MBA Application Preparation Seminars in Houston. The verdict: It’s a winner with MBA prospects. The new format allows time for group discussions and breakout sessions in which MBA prospects interact directly with admissions specialists from our member schools. “The relevance of the information presented gave me a very clear picture on how to successfully apply to The Consortium,” one attendee wrote in an evaluation. Another appreciated that the session allowed attendees “to interact face to face with admissions recruiters and get a better perspective of what they look for in a student.” ![]() MBA prospects in Houston gather for a lunch and table discussions about their application for business school at our MAPS session on Sept. 12, 2015. We hosted the Houston MAPS session on Sept. 12 at the KIPP Connect Houston Primary School. While our MAPS sessions in New York, San Francisco, Chicago and Los Angeles are in large auditoriums that can accommodate several hundred prospects, the Houston session was more intimate, with a substantial, but smaller audience. The format contrasts others, which include a Consortium presentation on the benefits of membership and the application process; a panel discussion with admissions officers focusing on the MBA application process; and a school fair. In Houston, 16 admissions officers from nearly all our member schools led table discussions in which students reviewed three sample application packages and answered questions about whether the applicant adequately presented the case for MBA admission, where he or she could have improved, and how he or she could have better highlighted strengths and mitigated challenges. The prospects also considered their own application in the context of what they learned from the case studies. In a second breakout, admissions officers counseled students on developing an application timeline, honing their personal elevator pitch and preparing for an interview. Students practiced skills with each other. The format presents some challenges for MAPS workshops in other locations, where The Consortium can attract 200 to 300 prospective students.

FROM The Consortium Admissions Blog: How comfortable are you with your networking skills? |
Do you love walking into a room full of strangers? Do you relish the chance to strike up a conversation, find common ground, make a contact, or find a way to help others? Then you probably love attending networking events. For the rest of us, we know it’s a required skill in the business world today. There are no shortage of resources out there to help you become better at networking. Entrepreneur magazine offered five steps for improved networking skills back in May, starting with getting in the right mindset for the event. It’s not a mercenary mission about collecting business cards. It’s about starting relationships. We also liked a feature from Forbes a couple of years ago that starts with this advice: Forget that it’s about working. It’s a play on the say theme: Getting in the right mindset. “once the interaction has been initiated, just talk. And listen. You know your business and your industry well enough to let the conversation happen organically.” The latest came out about three weeks ago from The Wall Street Journal, complete with a video with advice from writer Sue Shellenbarger. It’s practically a how-to guide about reading a room, watching for signals and understanding when a group might be receptive to your introduction (and when it might not be). We particularly liked the map describing a variety of groups or individuals, including the bored gaggle of networkers: “If you can join and enliven this group, you’ll be a hero.” h/t to the National Black MBA Association for highlighting the WSJ article for us. FROM The Consortium Admissions Blog: Alonso Moreno: Why his Consortium membership and Simon connections are valuable |
We were grateful to read Alonso Moreno’s story about why he applied for a Consortium fellowship, and how his membership and the team at the Simon Business School at the University of Rochester got him prepared for the first year of his MBA program. “I had all the confidence in the world because the Simon staff involved were nothing short of encouraging and helpful. My prep included: fine-tuning my resume, practicing my pitch, and conducting company research,” Moreno wrote on the school’s blog in a post published on Monday. “Upon joining Simon through The Consortium, I heard of the great network and support I’d gain by joining the school. I don’t think I came to fully appreciate what this meant until OP. The staff, student liaisons, alumni, and fellow classmates from Simon were all there to help each other.” Moreno is in the class of 2017 at Simon, where he entered intending to concentrate on operations and brand management. He came to his MBA after working for EYL Marketing-Entertain Your Life; GE Aviation; and PCC Structurals. Be sure to read Moreno’s blog post on the Simon site here.
