Hi,

Congratulations to everyone who received the interview invite. Does anyone have any insight regarding the interview essays? The questions are fairly quirky, so do we get more leeway to be creative, or do we have to tie them in with our experiences? How much weight is placed on these essays?

So I have been accepted to the Chicago EMBA program but I have also been accepted to Duke's EMBA program. Is there anything I am missing that I should accepted Duke over Chicago. I am not sure why this is so damn hard. With 15 years as an investment manager, I should be signed and done and just planning next year.

I would have posted this in the EMBA thread but it looks dead.

Great question! They are definitely quirky questions. Here they are for everyone playing at home:

Group A
• I started to think differently when...
• How do you define success?
• What is the first thing your classmates will notice about you?
Group B
• What would the future you say to the present you?
• What would you title your autobiography and why?
• What is your favorite word and why?

Quirky questions are dangerous questions. As you answer them, you need to remember that you are "still live on television" - you can't let down your guard. Everything you say needs to support your narrative and present a clean, clear picture of who you are, what your values are, and what the school is voting for when they vote for you. The same holds true for all those little questions that are sprinkled through most applications: even though they are not part of your personal essay, the Adcom is still reading those answers with a magnifying glass for your narrative.

When we review these essays, we find that bad answers tell side stories untethered to your career, or funny ones that are more about your past than your future. Good ones come full circle by explaining how your inner values and formative experiences have led you to pursue your journey in life.

Some other posts that might be helpful:

Hi, Thanks for the analysis. Yeah I figured its just another data point about your overall story. Honestly questions like this are quite hard, because you have to be more or less original but still somehow jam what you are trying to say with your candidacy in there.

I obsessed over it for 2 days, writing and re-writing in my head. To actually write it took me like 30-45 minutes, reviewed it a couple of times, but no major changes.

It took me couple of hours to brainstorm, but the write up took 30-40 minutes. Overall I spent about 4 hours brainstorming, writing and proof reading. Was a fun exercises though!

Anyone else bringing/brought a significant other to interview day activities at Booth? Anything to be aware of? Should my fiance also dress business formal? Thanks!

OMG!

I have so many ideas for that autobiography one.

I hope they have the same essays then for people applying in R2.
