Hi Boothie hopefuls! Successful execution of essay 1 requires research: knowing what is special about Booth for you personally, and how it fits with your goals and hence, reasons for attending B-school.

Reach out to Booth students and alums on LinkedIn; subscribe to all their social media properties, show up at events and if you can't in person, take part in online chats posted here https://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/full-time/admissions/events/online-chats

In the 2nd essay, get across how you resonate with their values. Shared values: this is how you make a heartfelt connection, which is the key to it all, really. See https://www.dropbox.com/s/r10qnlmruxpwimd/Booth%2015-16%20P1.pdf?dl=0

Friends, I took 2 GSALB courses at Booth. I did great in one course and got an A- and did not so great in the second one and scored B-.

Have a shot myself in the foot by scoring B-? Is all hope lost? Has any one retaken a course? I know I could have done better and willing to prove myself. I am nervous to take course 3 as a tie breaker now. Advice?

Anyone got in after scoring B- in GSALB course?

Welcome! Booth is a tough program so good luck on the applications and the 26th of September but most important on the interview invite day

P.S. If my memory serves me right, upstream is extraction and downstream is refining?
Do you spend much time in the field?

Ya. Spot on. I worked in drilling previously. Right now I am in production where we separate oil, gas and water and pump it to refineries, gas plants etc.

All my time I have spent in the field.

Thank you man. Booth is definitely tough. I mean I once saw an 800 get denied. I shouted "COME ON!!!!!!!!!!!!" that day at the top of my voice.

Hi Fellow Booth Applicants!

Quick application question: In the Booth app, there's a field just below the recommendations where they ask applicants to explain why they chose their recommenders. In my case, I'm not asking my current supervisor for a rec (due to concerns about bonuses/job retention/etc.) and I was planning to explain this in the optional essay section. However, given that I have the opportunity to explain my lack of a rec from my direct supervisor in the field on the recommendation page, would it be a good idea to forgo the optional essay?

Thanks and best of luck to you all!

Hi coltaylo94,

It is advisable that you answer the question Booth is asking, i.e. why did you choose that particular recommender. In the optional essay, you can elaborate on why a current supervisor is not one of your recommenders.

Good luck!

Hi everybody,

How are all of you approaching the essays. Especially the 2nd one. After a lot of brainstorming, I can maybe see how our interests and passions influence choices, which is difficult in itself. But are anyone actually mentioning anything about how leadership experiences influence choices...?

The actual question:

Chicago Booth immerses you in a choice-rich environment. How have your interests, leadership experiences, and other passions influenced the choices in your life? (250 words minimum)

would love to hear some thoughts

The wording of this question definitely threw me off a bit last year, particularly about leadership experiences. Here's how I interpreted that question and framed my answer -

Throughout the course of your life, you made decisions that shaped the life you have today. That includes decisions to attend a certain university, obtain a certain degree, pursue a certain major, participate in extracurriculars/hobbies and so called "leadership activities", and now has led you to pursue an MBA. I described what those key decisions and experiences in my life were, as well as my values and motivations that drove me to make those decisions. If you can incorporate some element of leadership experience into your response, I think that would help solidify the importance of those values to you as well. Hope this helps.
