Hi, could someone please review my profile and provide feedback for ISB: 2021 batch Undergrad, CGPA: 9.04, 10th - 9.6 CGPA, 12th - 89%, GMAT: 720, 6 weeks Aiesec internship in greece (volunteer work), state level Basketball (twice) and Badminton (once), two merit based scholarship during undergrad, internship at Samsung Electronics, 10 months FT at a startup - Koinly, 1.5 years at ZS Associates as DAA - coordinating with US clients and other stakeholders and Argentina team members. Do I stand a good chance for interview shortlist and final convert with this profile?

rajatsiwach

Acads - GPA and scores are good, GMAT is fine too. Work experience sounds interesting, given the international exposure and analysis roles.

Make sure to have strong and compelling responses to why MBA, why now, why ISB and what your post MBA goals are. Also highlight key achievements and transferable skills from your professional roles and ECs.

If these are presented right, you stand a good chance for interviews.

Hi
Can anyone help me evaluate my profile
10th: 9.6 CGPA
12th: 94.4 %

Cleared Chartered Accountancy in first attempt. Working with a big 4 and have an experience of 5 years in tax consulting.

Extra curricular: represented school in the table tennis on the state level

Planning to give GMAT in sep 2023
To add above, i have been the top performer in the team and have been working directly with the director and partner of the firm on many crucial assignment which include assistance in listing of shares to merger of listed company and handling the execution on my own. Plus i am also handling a team of 3-4 folks who report to me. Whether that would have an extra weightage in lieu of team work or leadership front?

1. Strong academic record. A good GMAT score (ISB's average is 710) would place you in a good position

2. Leadership doesn't necessarily have to be through a formal title. Sometimes it's more powerful when displayed through other means - for example, influencing/ persuading a client/ stakeholder who doesn't report to you (or is someone senior), leading a team through a challenging situation (without a formal title), etc.

3. Since you haven't mentioned post MBA goals (which is an important consideration), make sure to have strong answers to what your goals are, why MBA, why ISB, why now. These can help craft a strong narrative.

Hope this helps a bit. Reach out for a deeper chat.

Certainly a distinct background, as adcoms would appreciate.
As 6 years as an entrepreneur is still a long time, focus on the major takeaways by discussing A) the Scale (imagine growth%) of your idea and effect B) how the experience made you aware of the gaps leading to your current job and how it continues to influence your future vision. How does ISB fit into your story and how can it assist you develop your network and brand?

2. Aim for a balanced 700+ on the GMAT to alleviate any worries the adcom may have. Given your age and qualifications, I believe you would be a better fit for the IIMs given your age and experience. You could also look at a few top programs abroad.
If you are curious about your fit with other schools in India or abroad feel free to speak. I have worked with several older applicants with similar NIFT and e-com retail backgrounds recently.

Do not hesitate to reach out to us if you need help navigating your unique circumstances in the B School admissions process.

5 years is a long time to be in one domain (Taxation). I suggest pondering hard on how to demonstrate growth progression if your entire time at the Big 4 was spent in tax consulting. Since you mentioned later about your experience in M&A advisory, make that pivotal to your story (I am sure there will be many more such experiences which can stand out. Identify which ones!). That shows progression. Unpack your experiences and reconstruct your stories to show that working on high-impact projects has given you much more hands-on experience and opportunities to engage with industry leaders, more experiential maturity, and greater capability to contextualize business problems than most CAs who apply.

You did not mention your goals, but if you craft your experiences well in the application, transitioning from Big 4 to Big 3 would seem like a valid and well deliberated aspiration.

Your ECs are dated. For Finance professionals seeking MBA, showcasing a balanced right brain thinking and search for meaning beyond the numbers is also important. Take time to reflect and recall more impactful initiatives.

Aim for a strong GMAT score. ISB will be seeking reasons to accept you rather than reject you. You are a pre-tested high-potential candidate with prior business (and finance) exposure. The key to securing the admission now lies in effectively managing the application and interview process.

Post MBA target roles - I don’t want to switch industries, so targeting leadership roles with large startups/ corporates in the fashion business. As India is expected to grow fastest among the large economies, a lot of international fashion and luxury brands are targeting India, given growth is slowing down in the west. This fact opens up a lot of opportunities.

Thank you for your inputs. I certainly have many take aways from the 6 year long stint of running my own business and the experiences justify the need of formal business education and the network opportunities a good business school presents.

I am looking to apply to IIMs too as I’ve seen the cohorts at IIMs have high average work experience compared to ISB. For B schools abroad, I am not sure about the ROI, given the high costs of such programs. Also, for me, the opportunity cost is also a significant number. I’d really appreciate it if you can guide me with ROI aspect for foreign B schools and fit with other schools in India.

shivangijaiswal hope you are doing well

How a non-engineer becomes an IT consultant would need some background.
To be honest, I would have preferred a second professional transition to a well-known tech company/startup that serves as a springboard for your career and shows steep learning. I'm not sure what goals you'd present to ISB, but having an industry focus or function focus(such as Business Analyst) can help, and a couple of stints focused on gaining more expertise would improve your profile. Needless to say, your goals strategy would be very critical to your candidacy.

Perhaps it is a bit early for ISB, but a great GMAT score and outstanding application and interview could change that.

If you want further guidance, I am happy to speak with you one on one.
