2.Describe a time when you successfully transformed an idea into action. How did your leadership and interpersonal skills contribute to this experience, and how will this experience impact your contribution as a team member at the Jones School? (Maximum 750 words)

3.Choose one of the following three essays (Maximum 750 words):

A.What is the best mistake you have ever made? Include its impact on you and how it altered your view of the world.

B.Describe a defining moment or event that changed your life.

C.What historical event would you like to have witnessed or participated in, and why?

Required for re-applicants ONLY: Think about the time that has elapsed since you last applied to the Jones School. What actions have you taken to improve your candidacy? (Maximum 750 words)

Optional: You may use this essay to discuss anything else that you would like the Admissions Committee to know about you, or to provide information or clarification on one or more aspects of your application. (Maximum 750 words)

In general, be aware that Rice strongly values teamwork throughout their b-school experience.

I'm personally applying round 1.

Just curious, how's Rice MBA in terms of management consulting. I am currently working as a chemical engineering in the O&G industry with 4 yrs of experience in Houston. My company will pay 50-75% of my MBA tuition and I want to eventually work my way within management in my company and get into management consulting after a while. Will I be able to get a job in companies such as McKinsey & Co., Booz, BCG, Bain, etc.?

That isn't a traditional route to break into management consulting and you certainly won't be limited with a degree from RIce. A mentor of mine (who has a PhD from a regional school and no degrees from Wharton or Harvard) currently works for Booz. He obtained that job through networking and a bit of luck. Essentially, he was a unicorn and had all the right experiences for a major project and that's how he landed on the bus.

A more common method is to be recruited by an MC firm straight out of B school. In this respect Rice may be limiting for the companies you mention; however, the Employment reports from the last two years indicate that there were placements at McKinsey (see links). It may behoove you to find these individuals on LinkedIn and ask them if McKinsey recruits at Rice and if not how they landed their jobs. Also Kalypso, a boutique consulting firm, does recruit at Rice rather heavily.

I've been interviewing Rice alumni to determine if I should apply and I am impressed at the clever means students and career services use to get job placements. One alum I spoke with told me that the alumni network isn't limited to the Jones MBA program but they extend it to the school itself (and Rice University definitely has plenty of alumni working at major MC firms). He also told me that he crashed a specialized corporate recruitment event for under represented minority MBAs to meet with the hiring manager for his current job. Both of these can be tools for you to land a job in MC.

One of my favorite things at Rice is the Mob, you know the Marching Owl Band. Not many universities have that kind of tradition and school spirit where its okay to have a sense of humor. Sure, Jones is a professional school, but are yall really serious business all the time?

Sorry, I saw this a while back but didn't get around to answering. I guess this work-hard-play-hard lifestyle doesn't leave much time for posting on internet forums.

Anyway... The Rice MBA Social Life
(this is by no means comprehensive)

Well, starting out your cohort will be your 60 best friends and enemies. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll have stories and inside jokes. Each cohort will gain its own reputation. Every so often, you see the “others,” but you’ll still be meeting people for the first time in January.

Full Timers have Lunch Colloquium, a catered lunch every Monday. It will feel like a treat, until it feels like a chore when you realize you are supposed to sit through dozens of announcements that are always emailed out anyway. MBAE and MBAPs have a version with either catered breakfasts or dinners (weekend or evening programs). Also, on Wednesday nights around 9pm or so after class, there is a semi-official MBAP group that meets for a late happy hour in Rice Village.

Between the student commons, the Rice coffee shop, the gym, various campus cafes, you will not be short on seeing your fellow classmates. Kind of like high school, only smaller. And that gets even tiny-er if you live in the grad apartments, for then it may be hard to entertain evening guests discretely.

Rice Village becomes the default spot for any off-campus socializing, especially considering the proximity to the graduate housing, so it's of utmost importance and duty of native Houstonians to introduce their fellow classmates to the REST of the City beyond Kirby and Main.

The 5k track around the campus is where you'll run into, often literally, your fellow classmates. But more inexplicably, I have yet to go to Torchi's Tacos once this year and NOT run into at least one Rice MBA. To be fair, they are damn good tacos.

Even with all this, fall semester will have a significant amount of WORK, so despite all this time with your classmates, a more relaxed environment is necessary...
Now I'm sure everyone who went through recruiting has heard of partio. What is less-advertised is the post-partio, often ending up in Rice Village, somewhere on Bissonent, and occasionally Washington. Sometimes post-partio is extended to Friday night or throughout the weekend. Also unadvertised is the pre-partio, which starts promptly after the last Thursday class at 3:45pm in a procession to one of the two on-campus bars (Willy's or Valhalla) depending on if people want to walk the extra 5 mins to save $1.50. Don’t forget to go beyond McNair hall for there are other very interesting gems at Rice University if you look for it. The Baker Institute right next to McNair has Clintons, Bushes , and various Presidents coming in and out all the time. Rice undergrads are an interesting bunch, and maybe you'll find things you never even heard of, things you are kind of stunned even exist. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_of_Decadence). TREKS! The treks (most are in the spring) are a good way to get to have fun with your fellow MBAs with a mix of FT and P, first and second years. International Trips are like more expensive treks, but are heavily skewed toward “fun” activities (from what I’ve heard). Also, DIVERSITY CONFERENCES!!! Trust me, the people who got their summer internships first, got them at a diversity conference. Not mention, a great way to network with people in different MBA programs. NBMBAA, NAAMBA, MBAWI, NSHMBA, ROMBA... all held early in the fall semester so NOW is not too early to be researching this. Also note, you do not *need* to be a member of a particular group to go to the conference, but you should be supportive of their cause and probably a member of the particular club. And don't be that person whining about the cost of travel, this is what you came to school for. Also don’t be ‘that’ person who is too cheap to sign up for clubs (more than just the professional ones!)… Clubs often have members-only emails and events like happy hours and lunch-and-learns. Good way to connect across programs and class years as well. More stuff to look forward to - Halloween, End of semester Partios, International Partio, Gala (MBA prom), Follies, etc… Intern Joined: 15 Sep 2012 Posts: 36 Location: United States Concentration: Finance, Strategy Schools: Jones '15 (A) GMAT 1: 780 Q50 V48 GPA: 3.94 Followers: 1 Kudos [?]: 20 [2] , given: 3 Re: Calling all Jones (Rice) Applicants! Traffic is horrible in Houston, so if you are from out of town, get a hotel near the school. If you are going to show up late, call them. 2. Dress to impress - shave/groom, get a haircut (and use gel if you need it), and wear a suit and tie. 3. Prepare for the most common questions (e.g. why an MBA, why now, why Rice) and a few tough questions as well (you can find a bunch on-line). 4. Prepare for your interview out loud, practicing as if you were actually speaking with an interviewer. 5. Relax and be yourself - don't be too cocky, but arrive, speak, and walk out with confidence. Good luck. I wish you the best. Fall 2013 [#permalink] ### Show Tags 20 Oct 2012, 22:51 1 This post received KUDOS Hey, Thanks. I am applying to Rice for two reasons: (1) In my experiences with the program, I think that the program fits well with me. I also really like the academic push and rigor and the general group approach that Rice uses; (2) I am already a masters student here, making the Jones School very convenient for me. I'm on the young side of the curve too -- I have heard that there are many students from similar situations as us from current MBA students. Just because the average experience is ~5 years does not imply that they necessarily hate younger applicants, this statistic could just be the effect of the general older applicant pool for MBA programs. The courses require a lot of work. I can say this from direct experience in the course that I took and from talking with the students here. It's not a cake walk, but I wouldn't say that it is suffocating to the extent that we would not be able to have our own time or search for internships or participate in extracurricular activities. I have heard that most of the work is analyzing and writing cases (usually in a group, but I believe that some courses, particularly electives, may require individual write-ups). On one level, it is a lot of work, but at least it would involve interesting discussions with other Rice students. In terms of UT vs Rice, I think that although UT may be currently winning the battle for Texas "reference" school, Rice has far more potential. Rice is a top knotch university and its business school will invariably grow with it, especially given the Jones' schools effort and people. Rice Jones has been climbing the rankings and I don't expect it to stop. I would say that a 2015 Rice MBA will be a top 20 MBA if not a top 15. As far as geekiness, this is a funny and good question. It's not the same for business school at all. Everyone in the business school is very sociable and personable. I would guess that this is because of the two way natural filter process into business school (geekier students generally don't go to business school and business schools screen based on personality). fitzmanon wrote: texigan wrote: crackHSW wrote: @texigan ; You have amazing stats , any specific reasons why you applying to Rice? you can get into any of the top 10 schools and leave a seat for poor souls like me hah thanks. If it's not too indiscrete how old are you? Rice seems to favor older applicants compared to other schools in the same bracket (the student profiles presented on the website are quite experienced) and I believe the average work experience is 4.7yrs while I will only have 2.5yrs of work experience at matriculation (if I matriculate). Also, considering you already took a class at Rice what can you say about the courses difficulty. I heard that some schools are really intense academically - which in itself is great - but to the point where it becomes tough to look for internships and get deeply involve in extra-curricular activities. Being in Houston must be great for people interested for a career in the O&G industry but did not you feel that in Texas UT is and will be for a long time the reference business school? Plus Rice is the geekiest school for undergrad in the south by a long long shot, is it the same for business school students? Hi
I am Siddharth, from India. I had applied in R1 and have an interview on the 21st of Nov.
My profile: GMAT 680
WE: Baker Hughes, 5 yrs (before I join Rice, Next yr)

I have applied for MBA in Energy.

A little nervous as this would be my first ever interview for a B School Admission.

There is nothing to be nervous about. Just make sure you are well prepared with your answers - why Rice? why mba now? short term and long term goals, situational questions - a time when you disagreed with your boss, a time when one of your team members didn't put his/her weight, a time when your contribution in a team setting was lauded, etc. Make sure you go over your answers with someone aware of the application process and someone who knows you. Be honest and sincere in your delivery. Don't rote, simply remember the main points. Do not show yourself in negative light - articulate.

Be confident. You have a pretty decent background and score.

In 6 days, all of us full time applicants for round 1 will know our fate. Nervous.
In past years, accepted applicants got phone calls 0-2 days before the deadline, while rejected applicants found out their status via the web portal.
For us, that means to hope for a phone call Wedensday to Friday next week! Good luck to all.

The first calls might just come out tomorrow. Based on previous Rice forums on gmatclub, international applicants seem to start finding out first.

Good luck to everyone again!

To all those posting of scholarship offers communicated alongside your decision results, I owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude. By sharing your gpa/ gmat/ work profiles, you’re really helping me make more informed decisions about my future. It's my first time with a 730 and 3.63, not wanting to put out so easily.

In a heartbeat, I’d have put down the deposit to attend Jones but for the new info communicated in this forum setting. To those passed upon by Jones, take inspiration in my story. Declined by Rice via an early decision app with low SATs scores and a non-honors hs gpa, I went onto graduate magna from Vanderbilt.

Like Vandy, Emory Law saw beyond my 59th percentile LSAT score. Now a Texas attorney with a 96th percentile GMAT result, I am what so many schools want but was too stupid to see it until now. For anybody not getting into Jones, I’ll gladly be the help never present in my past. Just send me a private message.
