It looks like Feb. 18 is going to be a huge day on this thread (or possibly even a few days earlier). Hopefully we can bat six for six!

I frequently use baseball terminology to describe everyday situations. I think the movie "Major League" is a truly metaphor for life...as is every Arnold Schwarzenegger movie ever made. But that's a different story.

I believe Feb. 18 is the date that Rice releases Round 2 decisions. Correct me if I am wrong.

Thank you very much hwc.your inputs about rice would help someone like me who could not
visit the campus make my decision.

Could you and stat pls share your profiles?

The pdf on the main site i have already gone through.
the tution fees is almost the same as you said cox:40k and rice:44k.
the total expenses included for cox comes to 60k and rice 77k according to the expenses report at each site.

The international trips are fine, but even smu cox has got many international exchange programmes with several b schools in china europe south america etc...... i was a bit surprised not to find such partnerships at jones.

I have an almost full ride from cox but am currently leaning towards rice coz of the energy sector connections
and better placement statistics overall and specifically for consulting.
Am a R2 student, decision still pending for me.

I would be happy to share my profile,

Male, Asian American, 25
GMAT: 690
GPA: 3.5 – solid UG b-school, finance/marketing double
Work: 3 years analyst, investment/asset management
EC: decent

I’ll try to tackle the Rice/SMU question considering I grew up in Dallas and that is where I currently work.

SMU is a very strong program and I would venture to say it is the best in DFW. I would make the same statement regarding Rice and Houston. Both programs are regional and offer strong connections to local networks.

I would say the Rice name will carry well in Texas in general (Austin, DFW, Houston, SA), but won’t carry the same weight outside the state. I would say SMU will get you places in DFW, but outside the metroplex I find the Cox name doesn’t travel too far. Granted this is all opinion. I do believe that SMU is making great strides with their program and their national recognition (just look at the BW rankings you mentioned).

That said, I think that you need to consider why MBA. It sounds like you want to get into energy and I definitely think Rice is the better choice for that. I’m clearly biased but I think Rice will give you more options for both location and function (again, primarily within Texas). SMU is great in Dallas, but it’ll be tough to get into IB, MC, and energy, it’s definitely not impossible but I think Rice gives you those options whereas SMU might limit you more to DFW.

Take that with a grain of salt, I know both schools are very good, very generous with scholarship, and I think both schools have a very bright future. Good luck with your decision!

Just received my interview invite.

Is there any difference on interviewing on campus or by phone/skype?

Both should be almost same. On campus, they get to meet you in person and that should definitely be helpful to you application.

My personal take: if possible, especially if you live in the area, interview on campus.

Which dates ?

Anyways, I would say just setup an interview over Skype. I am sure it will not be a make or break issue. GL.
