Hey folks,

I just noticed that Cambridge is a little more strict when it comes to the English requirements for potential MBA candidates.

Do you know whether there is a potential to hand in the TOFEL scores after the initial application?
Or whether there are cases in which the school would waive the requirement for a test score?

Would be happy for everyone who can chime in.

Cheers,
Chris

Hey, for the current year, they asked us for English language test scores and proof of English studies after we got our admits. If you don't qualify, you have to give a Cambridge English test once you accept your offer. We weren't asked for any proof when we applied. But you can write to adcom, they respond very quickly.

Thank you for the quick answer my friend, highly appreciated!

I will write the adcom to be sure, but it is good to know that I can likely focus my time on researching and essay writing rather than studying for another standardized test. :)

Best regards & good luck with your studies,
Chris

Hey,

You don't need any English language ability test when you apply. It's not like Oxford. But you will need to show proof if you are accepted into the program. This is based on my experience as a current student.

I started my application couple weeks ago and there is a column to request English test waiver. So, it seems that they sometimes can waive this test requirement. However, my question is when will they tell us whether they grant the waiver. I'll probably ask this question to the adcom once I submitted my application.

As back-up plan, I'll start studying for TOEFL or IELTS after application submission as well. There's enough time I suppose although it'd be nice to have one thing off the list

What do you guys think?

I'd suggest you take a look at their English Language policy. For one, I studied in an English-speaking undergraduate but after dropping them an email, I could not get a waiver because it was not in their list of countries. So I went and did my IELTS.

Perhaps the safe bet is to drop them an email explaining your background and they can tell you in a couple days whether you qualify for a waiver :)

Thanks for your feedback!

I did drop the adcom an email before I started my application regarding my situation, which is very similar to yours, and I couldn’t get a waiver as well.

I just thought an email is less formal than application so they would stick to their policy. Maybe after looking at the whole application, they might give a little bit flexibility.

Again, this is only what I think could be the case. I’ll prepare for TOEFL or IELTS anyway

Did they give you a reason? I have only seen waivers granted if you have completed a bachelor's or Masters program taught entirely in English somewhere.

So, after checking their email again. They didn’t explicitly mention whether I can get a waiver. Instead, they mentioned there are certain conditions where the TOEFL/IELTS requirement can be waived. In general, test waivers are based on the location of the applicant’s studies, rather than the language of instruction or the language used at work. This is consistent with their policy. However, it seems that there are exceptions. (Not advising others to rely on this slim chance)

Anyway, to be on the safe side, I’ll take TOEFL or IELTS after submission.

Hope this helps
