Campus visits - before or after essays? [#permalink]

Hey everyone, I have a quick question - I'm looking to visit the campuses of some bschools I'm applying to in Rd 2. Is it important that I visit then before I submit my essays so that I can include my visits in my essays? Or would visiting after Rd 2 deadlines pass be alright as well, as far as showing my interest in the program to the adcoms? I just ask because most schools don't have any campus visits available in December, so I may be blow easier for me to go in January if my timing doesn't work out. Thanks for any advice, much appreciated!

Before. Your essays will be much stronger because you can talk about your experiences on campus.

A useful way to consider it is in terms of ordinal ranking. Visits before essays > visits after essays > no visits at all. Not only will your essays be stronger because of how much more material you will have, it also makes more logical sense. However, if you're concerned with being able to squeeze it in, you'll have to compensate in your essays in other ways. Then hit up the campus after. But definitely still visit!

If you visit campus before you write your essays, you will be able to talk about the visit in your essays, and use it to demonstrate your passion and commitment for the school. You can see here some more tips for campus visit: http://www.aringo.com/CampusVisit.htm

Before is definitely better, but sometimes (at least I know in my situation) it doesn't make sense to take the visit until after you applied, for whatever reason it may be (work obligations, distance from school, working on apps, etc.). For my situation though, for the schools I haven't visited yet, I will definitely take a trip to the school if they give me an interview.

I learned a lot about my target school during the campus visit that offered valuable insight on my essays. As long as your campus visit is before the R2 deadline then definitely wait to submit.
