IMO A.

However, designer interaction with consumers is superior to survey data; the data may tell the designer why a feature on last year’s model was given a low rating, but data will not explain how that feature needs to be changed in order to receive a higher rating.

The reasoning above conforms most closely to which

(A) Getting consumer input for design modifications

This is a reasonable judgment based on the statements given. specifically from "the data may tell the designer why a feature on last year’s model was given a low rating, but data will not explain how that feature needs to be changed in order to receive a higher rating."

(B) Car companies traditionally conduct extensive
postmarket surveys.
we cannot justify the word "traditionally "

(C) Designers aim to create features that will appeal
to specific market niches.
statements in the argument are very general there is no reason to believe the designers are creating features that will appeal to specific market niches.

(D) A car will have unappealing features if
consumers are not consulted during its design
stage.
This is next best option but "will have unappealing features" is too strong. the argument only says designers interaction with customers is better method than using survey data to create features. So one method would result is less appealing and other could be more appealing. this answer choice cannot be justified.

(E) Consumer input affects external rather than
internal design components of cars.[/quote]
this is def wrong. No comparison between external and internal design discussed in the argument.

IMO: A

Car companies solicit consumer information on such human factors as whether a seat is comfortable or whether a set of controls is easy to use. However, designer interaction with consumers is superior to survey data; the data may tell the designer why a feature on last year’s model was given a low rating, but data will not explain how that feature needs to be changed in order to receive a higher rating.

Analysis: Data available to designer is survey data, which tells why the current model is wrong. but it doesn't tell how it should be. So, It means customers should be more interviewed to get their inputs, because it will help the next version of design.

The reasoning above conforms most closely to which one of the following propositions?

(A) Getting consumer input for design modifications can contribute to successful product design. This will allow to improve the next design and rating also. So, It is the most probably correct.

(B) Car companies traditionally conduct extensive postmarket surveys. Not much information about the survey is available.

(C) Designers aim to create features that will appeal to specific market niches. Out of context.

(D) A car will have unappealing features if consumers are not consulted during its design stage. It is true, but appeal is discussed in the argument, not 'unappeal'

(E) Consumer input affects external rather than internal design components of cars. We are not sure whether it is correct or wrong.

This is a SIMILAR REASONING question .. They do appear on the GMAT , and are perfectly good Logic questions..

The Stimulus is mute on whether the Designers use customer input to influence or appeal to certain niches ( such as say a SPORTING or RACING niche, a Soccer mom Niche etc) .. This answer choice goes TOO FAR, and the information contained in it is out of scope..If you are having trouble with SIMILAR reasoning questions, i recommend using the search tag feature and first practicing on a few easier questions from this type, this question is just about as tough as any you may encounter (from this topic) on the GMAT..
