Hey folks!
Just had a query, seeking your guidance...
I'm a prospective student for the Sept'22 intake. By then I would've completed 4 years of WE. I was wondering how are career opportunities after MBA for students with less WE? Even if I manage to get into a school, it wouldn't make sense to spend 40-50L from loan if I'm not going to get a job of that tune. Please advise.
Also, would there be a difference in European schools and American schools in this regard?

Hi. Average work experience at most US business schools is 4-5 years of work experience at the time of Matriculation (meaning by Sept 22).
You can see average international WE here: https://gmatclub.com/forum/all-school-s ... l#p1319278 It looks like 5-7 years on average, so pretty close.

Usually it is not about Quantity per se but brands (quality) and career trajectory. If you were able to achieve great things in 3-4 years, then why wait another 1-2 years? At the same time, if you could not do anything in 3-4 years, then would another 1-2 years really make a difference?

While there hasn't been a lot of discussion yet I think it is the up and coming rage so I'd say we need an "Energy" category - that should include traditional oil/gas and new emerging energies.

I started a thread for energy. Only a huge list of companies I put together. I will add to it as time goes along.

We need a S&T + Hedge funds career track here. I'll try to put one up once I start school, but in the meantime would love to hear from folks who went down that path (hint kwam, 3underscore)

There is a thread in the B-School knowledge vault titled MBA Industry Info. Perhaps these should be merged? Some of the information is slightly overlapping.

added one, just quickly added my thoughts, but can answer some questions and update as necessary. Also added "Media and Entertainment" to the list.

Choosing the right career can be a very daunting task especially in a world which offers an array of paths, all of which seem to be leading to a golden goal. Careers can actually make or break one’s life, so it is important to make the right choice. Career guidance can help you in pursuing the right courses, in the right colleges or institutes and can guide you in choosing a suitable career.

Generally, M&E is split into 5 main areas:

- Films/Movies
- Music
- TV
- Entertainment/Games
- Social Media

For the first three, they don't generally hire many MBAs, and any job search will require you to do a lot of networking, unpaid internships, and having alums/professors/connections introduce you to the right person.

In terms of games (the area I'm going into), the traditional companies like EA, Activision, LucasArts, etc... all hire some MBAs, but not a lot. It's more of a recent trend with many companies starting their MBA hiring program in the last 3-4 years. At Activision, MBAs usually are hired as brand managers, with consumer packaged goods background. Electronic Arts hire their MBAs as product managers, doing a project management and marketing role. LucasArts has a few MBAs in marketing, production management, and business development.

Social gaming (Zynga, Playfish, etc...) and mobile gaming will have more MBAs, usually doing product management roles where they lead projects, design new features, and do a lot of metrics analysis to improve the game.

Social Media companies like Facebook and other smaller startups hire a few MBAs for product management, usually requiring some pretty good technical (software) experience or skills. There are some marketing roles in companies like that which require MBAs too.

Hope that helps!

Anything on Entrepreneurship in it's myriad forms and shapes?

- Dotcoms (yeah, alive and kicking),
- Product and service based startups,
- Social enterprises et al?

A whole lot of folks plan to start their own venture (a favorite long-term goal in bschool essays). A section on career options within this broad category might be helpful.

Is there a career path discussion for lawyers who are also looking to get an MBA? More specifically, What fields would be available for a lawyer wanting to transition into the business world. (I have worked in-house before and have a degree in economics, so I do have a general knowledge of business).
