Basically consider chemistry books as 1 block, so now u have to arrange 4 things and out of these 4, 3 things are identical (physics books)

Any easy approaches to solve such questions
We know rate of mach A, B & C
So together add rates of all 3 machines--- 5/8, we get time i.e 8/5 ... Now we know rate of A machine, multiply that by time since all machines will work for 8/5 hrs

Q machine a working alone can build an engine in 8 hours. Machine B or C working alone can build the same engine in 4 hours. If all 3 work together, what percent of work will A complete? Options - 11% , 14%, 18%, 20% 25%
Assume total 8 units of work to be done. (LCM OF 4,8)

A does 1 unit work per hour
B does 2 units work per hour
C does 2 units work per hour

Together, 5 units work will be done => A’s share = 1/5 = 0.2 = 20%

^5 units of work in ’x’ hours but since only amount of work done by A is asked, we can skip the additional step.

just consider for work done by A, B and C do 2 units of work hence total work done is 5 units out of which A produced 1 unit
(1/5) = 0.2 = 20%

if you want a more methodical approach you can take work done by A is 1/8 for 1 hour
similarly B & C do 1/4 units of work per hour hence working together they produce 5/8 units of work per hour (1/8+1/4+1/4)
(work done by A per hour)/(work done by all machines)

((1/8)/(5/8)) = 1/5 = 0.2 = 20%

well take take 3 chem books as 1 unit
so you have 4 books to arrange
hence 4! ways
BUT you have 3 identical physics books so you must account for that by dividing 4! by 3!
which leaves us with 4 ways

hopefully this is correct

i did it with the "logical approach"
some people prefer mechanical methods strictly dealing with numbers so i mentioned that solution just in case.

Much simpler to just assume the LCM of the time taken...in this case 8 units of work needs to be done

A takes 8 days for 8 units => 1 unit/day
B & C take 4 days alone for 8 units => 2 units/day

(1+2+2)x = 8 units of total work
x can be found if required, 8/5 days will be required to finish the work (roughly 1.6 days of work)


This is an approach if you’d like to avoid fractions... @Ami0Trafalgar ’s approach works fine too.

Options-
1. Less than -10
2. Between -1 and -1/10
3. Between -1/10 and 0
4. Betwen 0 and 1/10
5. Greater than 10
