Hi, sorry to bother but for the following question in practice exam (6), I have solved by isolating x ion the first equation and the and plugging it into the second, but is is very long sand tedious, i was wondering if there wasn’t another way ?

here is the question:

if 3x-2y = 32, and (3x)^1/2 - (2y)^1/2 = 4, what is the value of x-y ?

Sol:

4, 8, 10, 12, 14

bro there is a easy soln: in eqn 1. let 3x= a^2, 2y=b^2 then substitute value pf a-b =4, then solve for x ; x=12, y=2 x-y=10

A marketing firm found that, of 800 computer users surveyed, 280 were not familiar with either Website A or Website B, 220 were familiar only with Website A, and for every 3 computer users who were familiar only with Website B, one was familiar with both websites. How many of the 800 computer users were familiar with both websites?

in here - either / or in the answer key is referred to as not familiar with both

Hi!! I’m having troubles understanding this prep exam question
Pump A, pumping water at a constant rate, can fill a certain swimming pool in 6 hours. Pump B, pumping water at a constant rate, can fill the same pool in 4 hours. If both pumps begin filling the pool simultaneously when the pool is empty and pump B breaks down 1 hour after they begin filling the pool, how many hours will it take pump A alone to finish filling the pool?

A. 1 2/5
B. 2 1/3
C. 3 1/2
D. 4
E. 4 4/5

I don’t understand why the answer is C when
I’m using the TW=W1+W2
t-1/6+1/4=TW
4t-4+6=24
t=22/4=5 1/2
t-1=4 1/2

Let’s take it like this :

Let the total capacity of the pool be 24 L

Pump A fills the pool in 6 hours.
So efficiency = 24/6 = 4L / hr

Pump B fills the pool in 4 hours.
So efficiency = 24/4 = 6L / hr

So when they both are operating together, total efficiency of 1 hour = 4 + 6 = 10 L / hr

For the 1st hour it will fill 10 L and 14 L is still empty.

After 1 hour Pump B will break down. So the efficiency is only 4L / hr i.e. the efficiency of Pump A.

So time taken by pump A alone to fill remaining pool = 14 / 4 = 3.5 hr

Why have you taken t-1 in first step... Let A work for t hours, so t/6 + ¼ = 1 will give t=9/2.
But we are looking for the time A pump works alone, so cut 1 hour from total as for initial one hour both were working together, so 9/2 -1 = 7/2 or 3.5

Yes, the phrase '280 were not familiar with either Website A or Website B' means that 280 people were not familiar with either of the websites, implying they were unfamiliar with both.
