Company Y employs C women and D men. Do the women at company Y earn an average annual salary greater than $25000? a) company Y pays its employees a total of$30000(C+D) in salaries annually.
b) The men at company Y earn an average (arithmetic mean) annual salary of $34000. To find any average, we need the total and the number if the sample. In either case, there is no way to get the number of women employees. For all you know there were just 2 women (martha stewart and oprah winfrey) with lot of pay or 5000 women (working in Apple iPod factory) earning just 100\$.
