Re: Competing for market control, a large percentage of corporations' annu [#permalink]
I have made a reasoning whiuch I do not know if it is correct:
A,B -> problem with modifier, as said
C,D,E-> the modifier takes the period of time of the main clause, therefore if D is correct,E is correct, but they cannot be both correct so both are wrong and the mistake is probably in the last 4 words but i could not be able to figure out what it was.
Do you think reasoning works?

I was confused between choice C and D. Experts please help me understand how "various media" is better than "a variety of media".

Is it only because of conciseness or is there any meaning error behind it..

The spending was done through media, not through variety. Hence C is better than D.

"Variety of media" indicates the "various"-ness of the media (i.e. a particular quality of the media).
"Various media" indicates many different media.

Competing for market control, a large percentage of corporations' annual budgets is spent on marketing through a variety of media.

a)a large percentage of corporations' annual budgets is spent on marketing through a variety of media
b)marketing through a variety of media is what a large percentage of corporations' annual budgets is spent on
c)corporations spend a large percentage of their annual budgets on marketing through various media
d)corporations spend a large percentage of their annual budgets on marketing through a variety of media
e)corporations spent a large percentage of their annual budgets on marketing through a variety of media

Technically, A and B are not incorrect because of the VERB-ING use. So the sentence might say - Competing for market control, clause (not starting with corporations) is still correct. A is incorrect because of "a variety of media". - B is incorrect because of "variety of media".....

From what I understand about the Verb-ing modifiers, it CAN modify the whole clause. so C is correct because of "various media". Please can someone confirm this.
