Which of the following most logically completes the passage?
Concerned about financial well-being of its elderly citizens, the government of
Runagiadecided two years ago to increase by 20 percent the government-
provided pensionpaid to all Runagians over 65. Inflation in the intervening
period has been negligible, and the increase has been duly received by all eligible

Runagians. Nevertheless, many of them are no better off financially than they
were before the increase, in large part because ________.
A. They rely entirely on the government pension for their income
B. Runagian banks are so inefficient that it can take up to three weeks to cash a
pension check
C. They buy goods whose prices tend to rise especially fast in times o
inflation
D. The pension was increased when the number of elderly Runagians below
the poverty level reached an all-time high
E. In Runagia children typically supplement the income of elderly parents, but
only by enough to provide them with a comfortable living

choice D seems to make some sense to me. If many people were below the poverty line, this increase might still not compensate for their condition, at least for some of them.

E for me.
As The govt. increased pension -> supplement by Runagian children declined in accordance -> to maintain the same level of comfortable living standard.

E

Suppose an elderly person needs \$200 to survive.
earlier he was getting 100 from Govt and 100 from his children
Now Govt increased the amount to 120,
As per the option E, Children only compensate enough to make a comfortable living, Thier amount was reduced to 80 and the total remained 200.

I agree with Option E, because it is the best among 5, but it has a problem. it talks about "comfotable living" if children are supplementing the extra amount to the extent of comfortable living, it goes against the question stem, that they are no better off financially, which can lead us to assume that they are not confortable.......

Is there a typo in C , does it say "they buy goods whose prices tend to rise especially fast in times of low inflation ?"
If so my pick would be C. They may be getting more \$ but they are spending more. The other alternative was that 20% increase was never enough to start with as they rely totally on govt. Option A ?

I feel D should be the answer. Because only this option states that the condition of eklderly people before the increase in pension was already below the poverty line.
