Confusion regarding GMATPrep Accuracy  [#permalink]

Hi,
I am looking for a clarification on how my verbal scores were calculated in GMATPrep practice test. I got 34 (out of 41) questions correct with 4 incorrect in 1st 10 questions, leading to a Verbal score of 35. My confusion here is, even after maintaining 83% accuracy, why my Verbal Score was not in 40+.
I also recently took a Manhatten GMAT CAT as well and scored 34 in Verbal despite getting only 20 (out of 36) questions correct, with 4 incorrect in 1st 10 questions here as well. I am aiming for a 45+ in Verbal and plan to give GMAT in next 2 weeks. Please help me in understanding what actually went wrong in my GMATPrep test, and how can I improve further to get a V45.

Thanks!!

On the GMAT, the number of questions answered correctly is only indirectly related to the score.

For the majority of test takers, the impact of marking a question right (or wrong) depends to a very large extent on the difficulty level of that question and how good that question is at differentiating between test takers of different abilities.

1. Try not to go by accuracy rate.
2. Comparing scores across test providers is not recommended.
3. You might want to shift over to the new online GMATPrep (only the old one has 41 questions in verbal).

It's good to see that you're aiming for a high score (V45 is 99%), but it won't be easy to get there from a V35 (76%) in 2 weeks, unless that V35 was a case of underperformance.

Hi abhio38,

To reiterate, your GMAT score is based on not only the number of questions you answer correct/incorrect, but also the difficulty of those questions, among other things. Furthermore, when you take practice tests from companies other than GMAC, you may find some variation in algorithms used and thus variations in your score.

Rather than spending time worrying about the GMAC algorithm, you really should focus on the things you can control, and the number one thing you can control is getting better at the GMAT. If you get to a point at which you can dominate the GMAT, the specifics of the scoring algorithm won't matter because you will have the skills that you need to get an amazing score, right?

That being said, it may be difficult to improve your verbal score by 11 points in just two weeks. Are you able to take your GMAT a later date?

how to score a 700+ on the GMAT.

Feel free to reach out with any further questions.
