I am starting to notice an interesting pattern in high GMAT scorers which I didnt see it personally in my two attempts. All the high scorers always score above 700+ in almost all their practice tests including their diagnostic.
I never scored higher than 700+ in my diagnostic the two times I attempted my preparation for GMAT and never crossed the 700 mark on the GMAT yet.

Are the 700 clubbers preparing first and doing diagnostic tests later? or Are they born excellent test takers that their very first attempt is a home run? Very curious to know..

Firstly yes there are plenty of born good test-takers who, with just a couple of weeks of studying, can score amongst the top 1%.(Read as 99%tile)

But not scoring 700 on practice tests doesn't debar you from scoring a 700 on the real test. When you read experiences, do so with a pinch on salt and do not blindly believe that what worked for others will work for you or vice-versa. Reading experiences of other people provides motivation but can also de-motivate you don't read it in true spirit.

FYI, even Math and English wizards cannot ace the GMAT without some studying.

So your challenge now is to keep yourself motivated and do not accept defeat at any cost. Don't think about what others have done, rather think about your own plan of action from now on. There is plenty of material + help available to take anybody to 700 or even 750.

All the best!

What I take away from this anecdotal evidence is that the practice tests are a pretty good indicator of actual GMAT performance.

I do think you'll find that most people do show improvement from diagnostic through final practice exam and real GMAT score. For example my first real practice exam I scored a 710, my last several practice exams I scored 760-770. My actual score ended up being a 760.
