Covered with snow, John could not enter his car.

A. Covered with snow, John could not enter his car
B. Covered with snow, John's car could not enter
C. Covered with snow, John could not get into his car
D. Covered with snow, John's car could not be entered
E. John could not enter his car because it is covered with snow.

IMO D is correct choice.

A. Covered with snow, John could not enter his car - Ed-modifier incorrectly modifying John
B. Covered with snow, John's car could not enter - This don't make any sense - could not enter what?
C. Covered with snow, John could not get into his car-Ed-modifier incorrectly modifying John
D. Covered with snow, John's car could not be entered - Seems awkward- could not be entered by whom? Passive construction. But other choices are worst.
E. John could not enter his car because it is covered with snow. Tense error

Intent: John could not enter the car, as it was covered with snow.

Error: Covered with snow modifies John instead of the car. and the meaning of the sentence becomes "as John was covered in snow, he could not enter the car". Obviously this doesn't make sense.

Elimination:
A. As described above.
B. Distorted Meaning.
C. Similar Error as in A.
D. Rightly modifies John's car while retaining the intended meaning.
E. Tense Error.

Thus D is right answer.

Answered this question in 17 seconds. Answer was as obvious as day after night. The 700 tag should be removed.

The correct choice is D because we are looking to modify "car" instead of John.

Furthermore, E is luring us into a more familiar construction that does contain a tense error
