Hello!

Thanks!

In the sport of maxiball, in which the objective is to score more goals than the opposing team, each team member faces off against one member of the other team. The coach for the Panthers predicts victory over the Cougars in an upcoming match between these two maxiball teams. The chief reason for the coach's prediction is that the Cougars' best defensive player will not be defending against Fonsica, who is the Panthers' highest scoring player.
Which of the following, if true, would cast most doubt on the accuracy of the prediction made by the Panthers' coach above?
(A) The Panthers have defeated fewer opponents than the Cougars this year.
(B) Fonsica is the Panther's best defensive player.
(C) The Panthers' best defensive player will not be defending against the Cougars' highest scoring player.
(D) Fonsica is not the Panthers' best defensive player.
(E) The Cougars' highest scoring player will not be defending against Fonsica.

In 1998 more citizens from the country of Monrovia migrated from Monrovia to neighboring Abstania than during any prior year. In 1998 the number of reported violent crimes in Abstania increased dramatically over 1997. The unavoidable conclusion is that Monrovians who migrated from Monrovia to Abstania were responsible for this increase.
Which of the following statements, if true, would most seriously weaken the claim that Monrovians were responsible for the increase in violent crime in Abstania during 1998?
(A) Each year more violent criminals are apprehended in Abstania than in Monrovia.
(B) During 1998 more violent crimes were reported in Abstania than in Monrovia.
(C) In 1998 no Monrovians migrated from either Monrovia or Abstania to any country other than Monrovia or Abstania.
(D) In 1998 the number of unreported violent crimes in Abstania increased as well.
(E) In 1998 fewer Monrovians migrated from Monrovia to Abstania than from Abstania to Monrovia

for Q1
The condition given by choice (C) brings in a possibility that the highest scorer of the opposing team will not be contained effectively and may score goals so as to compensate or even over score the goals scored by the team in question.

1.

(A) The Panthers have defeated fewer opponents than the Cougars this year.

---> this is out of scope of the passage so can't be the answer.

(B) Fonsica is the Panther's best defensive player.

---> contradicts what is stated in the paasge, so can't be the answer. We can't assume that coach is lying about the player.

(C) The Panthers' best defensive player will not be defending against the Cougars' highest scoring player.
-- > BINGO, this gives us an alternative fact, that suggests a possibility that of coaches prediction could go wrong.

(D) Fonsica is not the Panthers' best defensive player.

--- > Again, contradics what is stated, we are looking for alternative explantion or fact

(E) The Cougars' highest scoring player will not be defending against Fonsica.

-- > again out of scope of the arguement.

2.
Here stated assumption is that increase in the number of Monrovian immigrants are causing trouble. So, we should look for a fact that states that number is actually decreasing to disprove the stated conclusion.

(A) Each year more violent criminals are apprehended in Abstania than in Monrovia.
--> Out of scope, we don't know whether these criminals are not Monrovians.

(B) During 1998 more violent crimes were reported in Abstania than in Monrovia.
-- > doesn't address the issues

(C) In 1998 no Monrovians migrated from either Monrovia or Abstania to any country other than Monrovia or Abstania.
-- > doesn't addresss the issue

(D) In 1998 the number of unreported violent crimes in Abstania increased as well.

-- > doesn't address the issue
(E) In 1998 fewer Monrovians migrated from Monrovia to Abstania than from Abstania to Monrovia
---> RIGHT. This suggests that more people are in fact leaving Abstania.

Hope this helps.
