Question 7 High-technology medicine is driving up the nation's health care costs. Recent advances in cataract surgery illustrate why this is occurring. Cataracts are a major cause of blindness, especially in elderly people. Ten years ago, cataract surgery was painful and not always effective. Thanks to the new technology used in cataract surgery, the operation now restores vision dramatically and is less expensive. These two factors have caused the number of cataract operations performed to increase greatly, which has, in turn, drive up the total amount spent on cataract surgery.

Each of the following, if true, would support a challenge to the author's explanation of the increase in the number of cataract operations EXCEPT:
(A) The overall population of the nation has increased from what it was ten years ago
(B) Any one individual's chance of developing cataracts is greater than it was ten years ago.
(C) The number of older people has increased during the last ten years.
(D) Today, health insurance covers cataract surgery for more people than it did ten years ago.
(E) People who have had unsuccessful cataract surgery are left with more seriously impaired vision than they had before the surgery.

I dont know if any of u are using Powerscore- CR Bible.
But in that it says that in 'EXCEPT' q's-
If the Q says all weaken the argument except- Then the 'except' answer doesnt not have to weaken the main point... it does not mean that it should strengthen the point.

In this Q- the stimulus is- more accessible operation for more people!!!
Whether the operations were successful or not is beyond the scope.

Hope this helps.

I think the answer is A

Improved technology----> increased cataract operations
(Health costs have increased because now more people go in for cataract surgery because of its increased success rate)

B. chances of cataract have increased..therefore more operations...not because of improved technology
C. costs have gone up because increase in no. of old ppl rather than improved technology
D. Health insurance would lower the cost
E. People with unsuccessful operations would go in for operations because of prior failure of operation and not because of improved technology

A has no bearing on the answer.

A is similar in reasoning to C. The more the population (as in A) or, the more the older polulation (as in C), the more the number of ops leading to higher national healthcare costs.

E,it is.

I wud like to question D as being IRrelevant to the question. Insurance costs should not affect the cost of healthcare to a nation. Insuarance provides a means of covering the costs..but the cost to the nation is incurred anyway. Am I wrong?

A general question from me:

The passage states that "Ten years ago, cataract surgery was painful and not always effective. Thanks to......., the operation now restores vision dramatically and is less expensive."

Can one assume that now the operation is:
1. less painful
2. more effective?

I will go for C. To me, E weakens the argument. If unsuccessful operation results in worse vision then the people may go for the second operation with the hope that it will be successful.

This is a Q with land mines built around. Look at what the Q is asking

support a challenge to the author's explanation of the increase in the number of cataract operations EXCEPT

What is author's explanation?

operation now restores vision dramatically and is less expensive -> increase in the number of operations

Now look for stuff that challenges authors explanation. So our INCORRECT answer choices will say they are the cause for increase in the # of surgeries

A is saying that pop is increased and that's why the number is increased.

B is saying that probability of getting C increased and hence number went up

C is saying that older people are more in number and hence more surgeries

D is saying that it's now covered by insurance. The trap is covered by insurance does not mean that it is less expensive. Covered by insurance and hence many people are doing it.

E is saying people will have vision impairment if surgery goes wrong. does not tell how the final number is increasing because of this? If at all the number has to decrease.

Hence E
