FROM From Bench to Board (Fuqua): MBA Programs with a Biotech Focus Updated Dec 13, 2013.First, a disclaimer: I am missing a lot of schools that should be considered. The goal here is not to provide a comprehensive list of schools to apply to; rather, my goal is to give a few examples of what MBA programs can offer for people interested in healthcare/biotech to help ignite the school research process. Many of these programs are highly ranked. Indeed, the strength of the school's brand is one aspect to consider when choosing an MBA program. However, what's most important is to find a program that is the best fit for you - your background and your goals.Continue reading »

FROM From Bench to Board (Fuqua): A random list of awesome Duke MBA events so far - Part 1 Was just going through my Outlook calendar from the start of school, and realized that there were a lot of one-off events that I enjoyed immensely. These all began with a club email or flier and I was curious enough to attend but was pleasantly surprised at how much I got out of it. There's many more than what's listed, but here's some examples, in a 2-part series.Continue reading »

FROM From Bench to Board (Fuqua): The Program 4 Entrepreneurs Kickoff at Fuqua This was the first formal event on campus I attended after arriving in Durham back in the summer. I remember walking into an auditorium full of future classmates who were interested in startups - it was a great feeling to be immersed in such an entrepreneurial environment.Like the posts on the random events I loved so far in the Fuqua MBA (part 1 and part 2), the next few posts of the blog will be about highlights in my fall semester. Hope that it'll help those who are applying for round 2 and 3!Continue reading »

FROM From Bench to Board (Fuqua): The Health Sector Management Bootcamp at Fuqua Duke MBA students who are also part of the Health Sector Management (HSM) program arrive on campus a week early for an intensive, 5-day, healthcare bootcamp. It serves as a primer of the US healthcare system and is the launch pad for our entire HSM experience. Half of the HSM folks do not come from the healthcare industry. Even for those of us who do, most only have experienced one or two different areas of a very diverse industry. While I was familiar with pharma and biotech, I had much to learn on the provider, payer, and regulatory aspects of the US healthcare system.Continue reading »

FROM From Bench to Board (Fuqua): Global Institute at Fuqua The Global Institute (GI) was a 4-week long experience back in August, sandwiched between the HSM Bootcamp and Fall term 1. While HSM students have had one-week of classes before GI, this is the first time that the entire first year class gets together in our sections for classes. At this point we were also divided into our 5 to 6-student C-LEAD teams to work on cases and group projects.Continue reading »

FROM From Bench to Board (Fuqua): The NCI/Avon Breast Cancer Startup Challenge at Fuqua, an Introduction If you had asked me what was my favorite Duke MBA experience thus far, this would be it. FROM From Bench to Board (Fuqua): Robert M. Grant's Contemporary Strategy Analysis Strategy was my favorite core course for the Fall 2 term at Fuqua. If you have a science background, then you're probably like me and have never been exposed to these frameworks. Taking the course has allowed me to clearly understand why companies do the things they do when I read about them in the news. The partnering and M&A sections were especially useful for understanding the recent trends in pharma and biotech.Formally taking the course has given me a more comprehensive and disciplined understanding of business strategies that I had only developed intuitively over my short career thus far.Continue reading »

FROM From Bench to Board (Fuqua): Blog post on the NCI/Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Startup Challenge Published! A couple of days ago I submitted my team's introductory blog post to the competition organizers over at the Breast Cancer Startup Challenge. It's since been published, and talks about the members of my team and why we are participating in the challenge.Read the blog post here. In addition, you can find my introduction on what the start challenge is in this post. For the next week we'll be focused on the competition deliverables as recruiting winds down for us MBA students. The final deliverable will consist of a business plan that contains details of our business and R&D strategy and a live pitch that we'll be doing over Skype to the competition judges. It's been close to six months since my team has started on this project and we've learned so much. We've really got a great team of students and advisors. It's been a wonderful experential opportunity for all of us and we're thankful for the support we've gotten from the Fuqua faculty and alumni, Duke Medicine professors, and local Research Triangle Park biotech professionals. Wish us luck!

FROM From Bench to Board (Fuqua): Belinda Martineau's First Fruit Belinda Martineau's First Fruit takes us back to the 90's when Calgene developed the first biotech food, the Flavr Savr tomato. It was the first genetically-modified product approved for human consumption - a significant achievement - and one can only imagine the regulatory hurdles they had to overcome. The story was mentioned as an example in the text, Building Biotechnology.Continue reading »

FROM From Bench to Board (Fuqua): Interview on my Duke MBA Experience Accepted.com reached out to me and asked if I would be willing to do an interview on my Duke MBA experience. I'm always happy to share this with prospective students and thought it would be a good opportunity for that. Answering the interview questions allowed me to reflect on my reasons for attending Fuqua. These questions are also a lot easier to answer now, as I have concrete experiences to share! I still can't believe that I've already been at Fuqua for close to 7 months now.Find the full transcript on Accepted.com here.

FROM From Bench to Board (Fuqua): Health Care Experiences at Duke MBA (Week in Cities) Recruiting is a major activity for MBA students and networking with firms is important. During term breaks, the Fuqua Health Care Club (HCC) organizes treks where student groups visit companies together. We call these treks "Week in Cities". They are a structured way for students to learn more about the companies that they are interested in and meet alumni who are working in relevant functions post-MBA. It was also a fantastic opportunity for 1st year bonding! I got to know a lot of my classmates better through going on this trip together.Continue reading »
