After 6 years in as tech and martech sales (4 as a rep and 2 as a people manager) I want to get my MBA to help me pivot into product management. In the short term, I’d like to work for a big tech company in product management , and longer term transition into an operations management role like COO at a small to mid-sized SaaS company, probably in the Martech space.

Hi. Tuck is not a big tech school really. Tuck does consulting really well and is a fantastic MBA program but tech is not the focus. A better program would be Ross or Haas or Kellogg.

In addition to above, you just cant go wrong with UCLA Anderson and USC Marshall both of which are very good options for a career in technology and have really good base in Product Marketing role. Would advice to stick to the Bay Area as there will be a certain Silicon Valley premium over and above the school influence. The location will be a significant advantages over the East Coast schools.

Maybe I am biased but I would almost recommend Foster in leu of LA Schools. While foster is not as bit and not as highly ranked, it is in Seattle right next to the headquarters where most jobs are for AMZN, MSFT, there is also a large presence from Google, Meta, and other tech companies. The alum base is pretty much all in tech so it is easy to connect with FT and PT students. It is not the location that helps in this case, but the side effects of the location are super valuable, if you are pursuing Tech.

The recruiting company is fairly limited to the Big Tech set of players within Seattle, LA/SF and broadly Cali offer a whole range of players from small to big guys. Even the functional industry would span across SAAS, Fintech, Cleantech, Martech so the range of options are wide in comparison to Seattle. No doubt Seattle is a very good option but the experience has been that it is a fairly limited recruiting pool of companies,

Feel free to disagree. I respect that. I may be jaded. I lived in LA for 8 years and Seattle for about as much.

LA is driven by entertainment industry and some regional tech offices. Aerospace does not recruit that many MBAs and not much left. Out of fortune 500, only 22 are headquartered in Los Angeles county. Besides entertainment, The biggest are Mattel and Amgen. There is also Disney but that’s entertainment along with Blizzard and Universal.

Debate is always good - this is just my opinion 😇 and I feel for MBA graduates, it’s important to be at the corporate office. There are more opportunities there for growth and that’s where most of the recruiting happens. Large satellite offices are also decent, there is Google and meta-as well in LA. However, most tiring that Amazon does happens in Seattle and while you can recruit from any business school and move to Seattle, you’ll have a bigger net work if you are local and a stronger one.

This is my opinion, but I also feel if you are recruiting, you want a big brand on your résumé after business school because that allows you to then recruit elsewhere and command a premium. On the other hand, if you got a medium or small company on your résumé and not many know about it, That’s not going to get you far. I see it with carries a lot more weight to have the FAANG’s on your résumé. 😇

Please push back 👍

No debates for a Friday :-) Just the limited point was I was referring the entire Cali recruitment ecosystem that becomes accessible through the two schools mentioned not just the LA market. Fair point about the Corporate Office exposure though some opportunities with high growth firms can also be exciting and impactful from a financial and personal standpoint. Totally agree with the Seattle assessment, I myself love the city and its vibe ;-)

Welcome to GMAT Club!

Interesting career move if you’re looking to switching to consumer products. It has not been a very popular field and it has not been a very well paying one either. So in light of the tech in Consulting Airport unities, many people have taken those routes.

Also, many people from software background realize that after an MBA they would actually take a pay cut. Sort of locking them in with golden handcuffs into being in software development… not sure if you’re there financially or not but something to be aware of.

Your background is fairly unique and I think would be appealing to a number of business schools. I’m not sure how strong your profile will be in terms of promotions and work experience but even with this GMAT score you can take a higher aim and if you can improve somewhat, You can definitely go up 5 to 10 ranking points. It is helpful to have a range however in case something doesn’t work out and you can get a sense of what options you have and how your candidacy is perceived by admissions.

PS. I see on the profile you indicated 25 months of work experience and you want to update it to the point of matriculating so it was counted to August 2024.

Happy to be here!

I actually couldn't find a selection for future industry that really suited me, so I selected "consumer products" while thinking of supply chain management. If I had to put it in my own words it would be management in a company with an international/global focus.

Also, while I work in software, I'm more of a client-focused consultant/business analyst. I started out of college and in two years I've received a promotion and title change and work on some of the company's most valuable projects.

While my career goals definitely aren't the typical consulting/investment banking, I personally don't find my background unique -- but I'm happy to be wrong! I'm a first generation Indian-American so I would consider myself "somewhat overrepresented." Thank you again for the feedback but I wanted to give more context in case it changes your assessment of my choices of MBA programs.

Got ya. It is awesome to have very specific career goals. When I was recruiting years ago out of business school, I was jumping on any job that was loosely a match. 😂 and I had a classmate who was extremely specific. She wanted to work in the sports and entertainment industry to be in the marketing and to be in the quantitative side of marketing. Two weeks later she had an internship offer and I sent 50 resumes that I never heard back about. It helps to be focused - it makes it sound like you’re searching for a ride opportunity rather than desperate for the job and it also allows people to connect you with the right people who may know someone. The key is to explain this well enough to the admissions team and make sure they’re not confused or concerned about your employee ability after graduation… so you want to be well researched in terms of what kind of company you wanna work out or your ideal position and things like that.

In terms of having a unique profile, perhaps. What helps quite a bit is having strong brands and company names on the résumé. It helps in recruiting and helps in admissions.

Hi. Happy to offer more thoughts about your profile if you share some background.

If you’re looking for a Consulting career in Southeast Asia, INSEAD makes a lot of sense. Kellogg is probably not as strong but likely also well-known and being a big program with many executive MBA branches, you would likely be able to network.

I think from the standpoint of statistics and scores, things are within reach.INSEAD does not publish their statistics or average GMAT but my guess is around 700 or 710. Kellogg average is about 730 so you’re a bit under but not the end of the world.

A lot will depend on your résumé and career progression and what you have been able to accomplish in the chief in the last five years. Also your interview will play a role about your readiness as a future consultant and things such as presentation and speaking skills and such.

After completing my MBA, my immediate goal is to transition into a consulting role at a top-tier consulting firm, preferably in the strategy or management consulting domain. Given my experience in the edutech startup industry, I have gained strong analytical skills and an understanding of how to optimize operations to improve overall productivity and efficiency. I believe that these skills, combined with the knowledge and expertise I will acquire during my MBA, will enable me to make a meaningful impact in the consulting field. In the short term, I am also interested in working with clients across various industries to gain exposure to different business models, strategies, and challenges.

Region Targeted:
I am open to opportunities across geographies, but I am primarily interested in pursuing roles in India, North America, or Europe. India is a rapidly growing market with immense potential, and I believe that my familiarity with the local business landscape and culture will be an advantage in this region. Additionally, I am also interested in exploring opportunities in North America and Europe as these regions offer exposure to a diverse range of industries and businesses.

Long-term Goals:
In the long term, I aim to develop into a senior leadership position within the consulting industry, where I can leverage my expertise to shape and implement strategies that drive sustainable growth for organizations. As a leader, I hope to work towards creating a positive impact on society, whether through advising organizations on sustainable business practices or through active involvement in community service initiatives. I am also interested in exploring entrepreneurship opportunities in the consulting space and leveraging my experience and network to launch my own venture.

Overall, my post-MBA goals are to gain the necessary skills and expertise to transition into a consulting role at a top-tier firm, and eventually, develop into a senior leadership position within the consulting industry. I believe that the MBA program will provide me with a comprehensive understanding of business operations, leadership, and strategy, and enable me to make a meaningful impact in the consulting industry.

We have applicants especially from Overrepresented pool with a higher chance of getting admitted. Also, we have a top 10 or refund challenge you could try.

The person who posted this has given plenty of details about their profile. If you are an admissions consulting firm, why not give a profile review here itself which builds the confidence of other users and motivates them to contact your firm? The comment suggesting everyone to check the website is potential spam and may lead to your account getting blocked here.

Hi and welcome to GMAT Club AnanyaAnindita!

A few thoughts/ideas:
1. MBA Applications:
With just 2 years of work experience you may be on the less experienced side, which is fine but you need to compensate and demonstrate why you are mature enough and ready for the MBA. I have seen Stanford for example, pushing people with 2 years of work experience into their Deferred Pipeline after admission, so just FYI. The reason is that often less experienced candidates will have fewer stories to support their application, few points in their LOR's and in general appear less accomplished on the resume. This is a generalization and it is possible you have an amazing resume with lots of accomplishments.

I can't speak about ISB but I would say with ISB it would be hard to explore US or Europe. Your best choice would be a spectrum of schools including Darden, Ross, Tuck, Yale, and perhaps some top programs to try your luck such as Kellogg or Booth. (Stern is quite expensive due to living expenses). Johnson is another option as well as Tepper.

2. Recruiting
For consulting, everyone recruits into this role which means the competition for Consulting is Intense. Client-readiness is going to be very important. Meaning skills such as presentation, confidence, and ability to think on your feet. In general, US would have better chances of recruiting and staying in the country in the short term (1-3 years after graduation) while I see many European graduates going back home. At the same time, US has been tricky with H1B due to "visa fraud" where the same person will apply with 3 different applications and that inflates numbers quite a bit... anyway, that's a different story after the 3 years.
