Dietary researcher: A recent study reports that laboratory animals that were fed reduced-calorie diets lived longer than laboratory animals whose caloric intake was not reduced. In response, some doctors are advocating reduced-calorie diets, in the belief that North Americans’ life spans can thereby be extended. However, this conclusion is not supported. Laboratory animals tend to eat much more than animals in their natural habitats, which leads to their having a shorter life expectancy. Restricting their diets merely brings their caloric intake back to natural optimal levels and reinstates their normal life spans.

my guess is A It indicates that the lab conditions closely mimic current human overeating conditions.

B argument had nothing to do with fat
C "not all" do could still mean many do
D "some" does not indicate any tendency
E the correlation is not described

I would say B. In option A, it is comparing animals' diets to those of humans. We are not trying to compare animals to humans. we are only comparing the life span of animals with a certain diet in 2 different settings that would weaken the claim in the argument. Option B addresses that. The animals that eat a lot, which is shown by the fact that they have high fat content, will not have a long life. This weakens the claim made in the last part of the argument. that last part says that animals that eat less will have a shorter life span, and option B contradicts that. is it B?

The argument never mentions fat. It would be like saying "north americans with red sweaters and low calorie diets have longer life expectancy than those with brown sweaters and low calorie diets"

If the answer is B, I'm gonna sent Mr. GMAT an e-smack

But even if the argument never mentions fat, as per (B), low calorie diets are probably not the only contributing factor to the life expectancy. Other than low calorie factor, the fat factor exists. So the argument can be weakened. Right? What say?

am I missing something here?

The researcher's statement can be summarized as: "North Americans cannot increase their lifespan by simply reducing caloric intake, because reducing intake only helps those who have too much intake to begin with. The experiment with animals is not relevant to the greater population because it reflects this rare case where there is too much intake to begin with."

A. says "the experiment does apply to the larger population, because the larger population consumes too many calories, just like in the experiment"

anyway, I think it's time for the OA. what is it?

consider this period.....Restricting their diets merely brings their caloric intake back to natural optimal levels and reinstates their normal life spans....it means that their diet has too much calories.....A follows the same reasoning therefore it seems the best answer....

A.

The researcher claims that the conclusion - a low cal diet would extend the life span of North Americans as it does for lab animals - stands weak because a low cal diet just brings the life span back to normal. the life span of lab animals is shortened by over eating.

The claim that the conclusion is weak would weaken if a similar case (of shortened life span due to over eating) holds true for North Americans. In that case the life span of NA would be extended by getting back to normal.
