notes: "a primary…" is an appositive, describing "Dimet"; "such as" introduces examples that must be parallel, "X, Y, and Z"; "Dimet" is singular, we need "is".

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

Dimethyltryptamine, a primary alkaloid in plants such as the Diplopterys cabrerana, Mimosa hostilis, and appearing in Psychotria viridis, is a naturally-occurring tryptamine first synthesized chemically in 1931.

A. Dimethyltryptamine, a primary alkaloid in plants such as the Diplopterys cabrerana, Mimosa hostilis, and appearing in Psychotria viridis, is

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. In a list, the same part of speech must be maintained for all the words in that list. In this answer choice, two nouns (Diplopterys cabrerana and Mimosa hostilis) are grouped with a verb (appearing).

What helps us identify this question as a Parallelism question as well as identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign: A list of 3 items or more, separated by commas and and/or before the last item.

B. A primary alkaloid in plants such as the Diplopterys cabrerana, Mimosa hostilis, and appearing in Psychotria viridis, Dimethyltryptamine is

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect and repeats the original mistake.

C. Dimethyltryptamine, a primary alkaloid in plants such as the Diplopterys cabrerana, Mimosa hostilis, and Psychotria viridis, are

Although this answer choice corrects the original Parallelism error by getting rid of appearing in so that all the items in the list are of the same part of speech (a noun in this case), it creates another grammatical mistake. The singular subject Dimethyltryptamine does not agree with the plural verb are.

What helps us identify this question as a Subject Verb Agreement question and identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign: A long complex subject / a long distance between the subject and the verb

D. A primary alkaloid in plants such as the Diplopterys cabrerana, Mimosa hostilis, and Psychotria viridis, Dimethyltryptamine is

This answer choice corrects the original Parallelism error by placing three nouns in a list: Diplopterys cabrerana, Mimosa hostilis, and Psychotria viridis.

Although the loss of the word "appearing" seems to change the original meaning, the change of meaning is required here, as the original sentence commits the grammatical error of maintaining an incorrect parallel construction. In the orignal sentence, the incorrect parallel construction is in the form of "a primary alkaloid in A, B and appearing in C"; the first two are nouns (Diplopterys cabrerana, Mimosa hostilis), but the last part of the parallel construction is a verb "appearing".

Since change of meaning errors are the last in the work order, after grammar/logic mistakes, and since the other answer choices also commit grammar errors (B and E repeat the same parallelism mistake; C commits a subject verb agreement error with Dimethyltryptamine...are,) D remains the least worst answer choice.

E. Dimethyltryptamine, a primary alkaloid in plants such as the Diplopterys cabrerana, appearing in Psychotria viridis, and Mimosa hostilis, is

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect and repeats the original mistake.
