Re: Discontinuing the use of most habit-forming drugs causes emotional dep [#permalink]
The passage:
- Discontinuing the use of most habit-forming drugs causes emotional depression.
- Playing recreational sports can help reduce the emotional depression caused by discontinuing the use of such drugs.
- Some amount of emotional depression is unlikely to be preventable.

(A) Not necessarily true. The passage says "most" habit-forming drugs, leaving room for exceptions.

(B) Not necessarily true. It only suggests recreational sports can help reduce depression caused by discontinuing drugs, not prevent all depression entirely. People who never used drugs might also experience depression for other reasons.

(C) This follows the logic of the passage. Discontinuing habit-forming drugs causes depression, and even with recreational sports, some depression might remain.

(D) Not necessarily true. The passage doesn't address using drugs to avoid depression, and it's generally unhealthy.

(E) Not necessarily true. The passage only suggests recreational sports can help reduce depression, not that it's the best way. There might be other methods.

GMATNinja Isn't the question testing us on having a prior knowledge of opium??

Are these options also correct? Also can you please rank these 3 options as per gmac standards "most suited"

1) An individual who discontinues the use of an addictive Weed with THC 25% will most likely suffer from some emotional depression despite playing recreational tennis.

2) An individual who discontinues the use of an addictive "afeem", a drug found in himalyan ranges, will most likely suffer from some emotional depression despite playing recreational tennis.

3) An individual who discontinues the use of an addictive opium will most likely suffer from some emotional depression despite playing recreational tennis.

Yeah, I suppose you'd have to assume that "discontinuing the use of an addictive opioid" qualifies as "discontinuing the use of a habit-forming drug". That's not much of a stretch given the context, especially if you use process of elimination.

This is an unofficial question, so I wouldn't sweat the minor imperfections too much! B ut yes, this would probably better if it were made 100% clear than an opioid is, in fact, a type of habit-forming drug.
