Let 1 item cost $100. if you buy three you will pay $300 and get 1 more item for free. so you get discount of $100. total price you paid $300.

Discount = 100/300 *100 =33.33 %

25%.

Lets assume each item costs 10 bucks.
Here we are getting 4 items at 30 bucks so each item will cost = 30/4 = 7.5 bucks.
So total discount = 25%

From what I learnt in school days, discount is calculated on selling price.

Discount % = discounted amount / total selling price. In calculating discount you have also taken 4th product as if it was also sold on buisness though it is a free item.(in fact it is the discount itself). hmmm in a way you can say that 25 % is right if you see all products at end of transaction as equal. But 4th product is not part of transaction. Hope fluke or someone knowledgeable answers this.

I see the flaw in your reasoning. You are considering the fourth item as free even for the seller. the discount is on total price of the products. So even if we use your line of thought, the discount should be 100/400*100 = 25%.

I hope I am making sense here.

Considering no other discounts offered in conjunction:

100 per item; 4 items; $400
75 per item; 4 items; $300

%DISCOUNT=100-75=25

Normally you would pay 4x
But, you actually paid 3x

So, %discount=(4x-3x)/4x*100=25%

Gmatmission and fluke,

That's right , sorry my mistake. I didn't counted discount on total price of products but only on selling price of products which are not free. I took 4th item as discount itself. so calculated discount discount from point of view of free product and not the total offer.
