Undergrad: top-30 university/top-10 undergrad business program, finance major, 3.8 GPA
Professional: one year in consumer banking and 2 years at a multinational real estate company. Current title: Sr. Financial Analyst
GMAT: 770 (48Q, 51V, 8IR, essay not scored yet)
Recommendations: excellent
Essays: haven't written them yet but they will be good

Do I have a solid chance at getting into a top-7 school if I apply to all of them?

Edit: perhaps should have mentioned I am a white American male.

Hello TryingToPass,

Thanks for writing in.

On the face of it, yes, you definitely have a chance at making it to the M7.

Having said the above, you have not provided us with enough details on the work you've done and the reason for the shift from banking to real-estate. Frankly, much will depend on how you portray your strengths through your essays and the feasibility of your career plans. In addition, you have not shared any details pertaining to your extra-curricular activities and the Admissions Committee would be looking out for those, as well.

R1 next year would definitely be a better option; however, if you are confident that your essays will be in great shape, you could look at the later rounds for Fall 2019, as well.

Good Luck!

Hey TryingToPass!

Your GMAT score and GPA place you well within reach of an M7 school. However, once you pass these "thresholds" for academic achievement, the focus turns to your story, leadership experience, and hirability.

What are your goals post-MBA? I would focus your efforts on the particular schools that match these goals instead of trying to get 10 applications out for R1. Your background and goals may be an amazing fit for one school and not so much for others. It may seem like very high scores would make you immune to rejection, but fit is still very important for each school and largely drives admissions decisions amongst similar applicants.

Yes, you have a solid chance of admission to a top school. If you'd like to have a longer conversation feel free to reach out at scott@personalmbacoach.com!

Best,

ABatExpertsGlobal:
Thank you for your insight! I moved from banking at the conclusion of a management program; during the course of the year I began to realize that banking was not for me. In the meantime I have worked on planning, forecasting and analysis. I have decent extra-curriculars since college (some volunteering and such) but nothing major.

From what people are saying, it seems like a lot will ride on the essays and some of the unmeasurables in my application.

Hey PersonalMBACoach,

Thank you--I will keep that in mind as I move forward. It seems like a good idea to go for quality over quantity with regard to applications. The only thing I know for sure right now about my post-MBA goals is that I do not want to do anything extremely quantitative.
