Do you Write Down anything for SC questions ?

I know that we should try solve the SC questions within 1 minute. do you guys write down anything while attempting a SC question ?


say 2-3 split etc..

Has/Have and then striking out ..or doing everything in Mind ?

I do...sometimes. Often I'll jot notes for parallelism questions, on which I may have to make a connection between several list items.

My scrapboard might have this on it

(she) joined....
, was injured, and was discharged
, was injured, while being discharged
and was injured, and discharged
, injured, and was discharged
, having been injured and discharged

I can more easily see the intended parallelism vs. the faulty parallelism with all the garbage removed.

Other times when I think notes might help:
(1) There are 3 or 4 splits, but I'm not enthusiastic about any of them. I can eliminate choices that have the most "X"s next to them in my notes.
(2) Long underlined section and I want to keep track of not only what I eliminated but why, just in case I have to reconsider once I reach the end.

I don't tend to write very many notes for SC questions, except for them I feel I've narrowed it down to the "issue" being tested (whether it's subject-verb agreement, matching tenses, etc.). If I feel like I have identified the issue and want to strip out all of the extra material in the sentence, I may try writing it a couple of different ways using just the key parts where the statements differ, which allows me to focus on just the "meat" of what's being asked.

As a style thing, I prefer not to do this except for when I have to, but some of our students benefit a great deal from this approach. As long as it doesn't become a time-suck for you, it can help you get those more difficult SC questions correct.

I usually don't write anything down for SC's. I use a but that's about it.

Actually the only time I take any notes is for the RC. SC and CR are barely any writing and only for the hardest SC/CR's i use a grid. I end up using maybe 8-10 grid lines during verbal.

I tend to write down when I see a SC with more than 2 lines , but I end up spending more than 2 mins/question.

BB..I know that you solve the SCs in 30 - 45 sec and surely you will not do that ;)
