Make sure to back up your essays online, or on an external hard drive.

I just recently set up Dropbox and it's been super convenient, with the free account you get 2gb of free storage, and it automatically stores the revision history of your documents.

It's also helpful in that you can access your documents anywhere via the Dropbox website.

This is solid advice! I do the same... except I use Google Docs to house my essays and Dropbox for my resources, notes, and short-answer responses.
