(A) little water or services exist
(B) little water or services exists
(C) few services and little water exists- Verb agreement
(D) there is little water or services available
(E) there are few services and little available water

Pls explain.....

Ans not 'A' because LITTLE doesnt go with SERVICES, because SERVICES are countable.

Ans not 'B' because of the same reason as above.

Not 'C' because EXISTS is Singular which doesnt tie in with Water and Services. The sentence basically doesnt sound ok with option 'C'

Not 'D' for the same reason as why not A.

'E' is perfect.

Does this make sense?

I won't be able to pick any of the answers from this list, but if I had to guess, I would go with E.

(A) little water or services exist --- in this form, little applies to both water and services. since services are countable, you can not use little (i.e. little services - even sounds awkward).
(B) little water or services exists -- singular exists does not agree with plural water
(C) few services and little water exists -- changes meaning of sentence -- and/or
(D) there is little water or services available -- same explanation as A (i.e. little services)
(E) there are few services and little available water -- correct use of few and little, but changes or to and.

It is a general principle that whenever –or is found in a collection of choices, each of the choices will be taken as singular and the verb also will be singular , while, if – and – is found, both the subject and the verb will be plural

(A) little water or services exist …… services matched the verb exist but little water does not.

(B) little water or services exists … reverse of A; little water tallies with exists, while services does not

(C) few services and little water exists ------ few services and little water is plural; does not tally with exists.

(D) there is little water or services available --- There is little water is okay; but there is services available is not okay.

(E) there are few services and little available water ---- The plural subject --- few services and little available- tallies with the plural verb are ; correct choice

what is wrong with A here ?

as per my understanding when the subject is joined by "or/nor", the verb need to agree with the subject closest to the verb, which is services in A. so it should be exist, which is what is given.

I am confused here, can someone help me out please ?

Hi vishalrastogi.

I'm happy to help.

Downzoning, zoning that typically results in the reduction of housing density, allows for more open space in areas where little water or services exist.

(A) little water or services exist
Wrong. Little (X or Y) = Little X or Little Y. But services is countable --> can't use little

(B) little water or services exists
Wrong. Same as A.

(C) few services and little water exists
Wrong. [X and Y] --> compound noun --> plural --> "exists" is wrong.

(D) there is little water or services available
Wrong. Same as A. Little X or Y = Little X or Little Y. But services is countable --> can't use little

(E) there are few services and little available water
Correct. Only E uses correct grammar. (few services + little water)

Hope it helps.

Dear goodyear2013,
I'm happy to respond.

"water" is uncountable, so we use "little water."
"services" are countable, so we use "few services."
See:
http://magoosh.com/gmat/2012/gmat-gramm ... -vs-fewer/
The choices with "little water or services" are completely wrong. This eliminates (A) & (B) & (D).

As a subject, "little water" is singular, and by itself would take a singular verb.
As a subject, "few services" is plural, and by itself would take a plural verb.
As a compound subject, "few services and little available" is definitely plural, and demands a plural verb.
This blog discusses related issues:
http://magoosh.com/gmat/2013/gmat-sente ... agreement/
The choices with singular verbs, (B) & (C) & (D), are incorrect.

These splits eliminate everything except (E). Choice (E) is grammatically correct, not ideal, but acceptable, and it is the best possible answer.

Does all this make sense?
Mike

251. Downzoning, zoning that typically results in the reduction of housing density, allows for more open space in areas where little water or services exist.
(A) little water or services exist --> Should be "and" coz of meaning/ water is uncount and services is count so can't use little for both/ S-V agreement
(B) little water or services exists --> same as (A) except S-V
(C) few services and little water exists--> S-V agreement
(D) there is little water or services available--> little/or
(E) there are few services and little available water --> seem perfect

Do we always consider water as a singular quantity? or can there be a scenario where water acts as plural.
Kindly explain.

I do not think that in the ordinary sense , water can be plural. But somebody might know some weird case of water being plural and it will be interesting to know such cases. Water is generally taken to be generic and therefore singular. Buit one might argue that - every ocean has its own water - is not as good as - all oceans have their own waters -.

(A) little water or services existIncorrect as services cannot be "little".Its not a quantity..its a number
(B) little water or services existsIncorrect as services cannot be "little".Its not a quantity..its a number. Also it cannot be"exists".. They "exist"
(C) few services and little water existsFor plural we use exist
(D) there is little water or services availableincorrect- as services are plural so is should not be there
(E) there are few services and little available water- Grammatically correct
My Doubt- Here "or" is replaced by "and" -it has changed the meaning of the sentence. How can this be the correct option?

Downzoning, zoning that typically results in the reduction of housing density, allows for more open space in areas where little water or services exist.
(A) little water or services exist
Services does not go with little, fewer should be used for services
(B) little water or services exists
Services does not go with little, fewer should be used for services, also exists is the wrong usage.
(C) few services and little water exists
It should be exist in place of exists as we are talking about more than one thing.
(D) there is little water or services available
it should be there are little water or serivces
(E) there are few services and little available water.
Correct

Consider these two structures:

There are/is few services or little water here

There are/is little water or few services here

Question: What verb should we use in each case?

Notice that there is 'or' between two items.

(B) little water or services exists
(C) few services and little water exists
(D) there is little water or services available
(E) there are few services and little available water

Hi,
Lets get few things first:
1. Either ... or and Subject verb agreement:
- the verb should match the closest noun
- Example 1: Either Danny or his friends were talking yesterday while X happened.
- Example 2: Either Danny's friends or Danny was yesterday while X happened.
2. Using qualifiers:
- we notice 2 kinds of nouns: countable and uncountable
- water - uncountable -> needs little
- services - countable - needs few

X - (A) little water or services exist
- little (for uncountable) + services is wrong.

X - (B) little water or services exists
- little (for uncountable) + services is wrong.
- the verb exists is wrong

X - (C) few services and little water exists
- exists does not convey the intended meaning regarding services.
- the fact a service exist, does not mean it is available.
- in addition, the use of and creates a "plural subject", and so the use of a singular verb "exists" is wrong.

X - (D) there is little water or services available
- the use of "or" indicates parallelism between "little water" and "services"
- notice that the verb "is" wrongly applies for both of the elements in the parallelism.

V - (E) there are few services and little available water
- we identify the parallelism marker "and" - "services" and "water" are 2 nouns and so the parallelism stands.
- the use of "and" creates a plural noun, and so the use of the verb "are" is correct.
This option is correct.

Downzoning, zoning that typically results in the reduction of housing density, allows for more open space in areas where little water or services exist.

Issue: Subject-Verb Agreement | Modifier

Analysis:
1. In this sentence we see little being used to modify "services". Since "service" is countable, we need to use "few" to modify it.
2. Another thing to notice is subject-verb agreement issue for the verb being used for compound subject "few services and little water". We need to use a plural verb to refer to them.

(A) little water or services exist
- "little" incorrectly modifies services

(B) little water or services exists
- "little" incorrectly modifies services
- In case of two nouns separated by "or", the verb should agree with closer noun. However, in case this does not happen. "exists" does not agree with plural "services"

(C) few services and little water exists
- "exists" does not agree with plural subject "few services and little water"

(D) there is little water or services available
- "little" incorrectly modifies services
- "available" does not agree with singular subject "water or services"

(E) there are few services and little available water

1st point- it has to be 'AND" not 'OR'
C, E

(A) little water or services exist
(B) little water or services exists
(C) few services and little water exists
(D) there is little water or services available
(E) there are few services and little available water
Correct.
