What is the answer to this question? When the main stem of the question says, positive integers the exlanation for statement 1 used negative numbers to prove its case that statement 1 was not sufficient.

This confused me a little... Anyone who can clear my misconception?

It's (A)

With y = 2*x, we have

4^x * (1/3)^y
= 2^(2*x) * (1/3)^(2*x)
= (2/3)^(2*x) < 1 as x > 0

It's stated that x & y are both positive integers... Your answer was correct

4^x(1/3)^y can be written as (4^x/3^y)

St1:
y = 2x, so we have (4^x/3^y) = (4^x/3^2x) = (4^x/9^x) = (4/9)^x. This is always less than 1. Sufficient.

St2:
y = 4, so we have (4^x/81). We don't know x, so we can't tell if it's smaller or greater than 1. Insufficient.
