given
sum of 5 day temp = 85*5 = 430

#1
sum of 4 day temp = 87 * 4 ; 348
so friday temp = 430-348 = 82
sufficient

#2
We know that average high temperature from Monday through Friday = 86 degrees Fahrenheit.
Monday through Thursday = 86 + 1 = 87 degrees Fahrenheit.
high temperature on Friday = (86 x 5) – (87 x 4) = 430 – 348 = 82 degrees Fahrenheit.
IMO D

Choice D. Statement 1 can be solved to get 82. From statement 2, we can deduce that because of Friday, the avg temp fell 1 degree meaning Mon-Thu, the avg temp must have been 87 degrees. This is the same info as statement 1 so hence D.

Solution

Given:
    • During a 5-day period, Monday through Friday, the average (arithmetic mean) high temperature was 86 degrees Fahrenheit.

To find:
    • The value of the high temperature on Friday.

Analysing Statement 1
As per the information given in statement 1, the average high temperature for Monday through Thursday was 87 degrees Fahrenheit.
    • Total high temperature from Monday through Thursday = 87 x 4 = 348
    • Also, total high temperature from Monday through Friday = 86 x 5 = 430
    • Therefore, high temperature on Friday = 430 – 348 = 82 degrees Fahrenheit

Hence, statement 1 is sufficient to answer the question.

Analysing Statement 2
As per the information given in statement 2, the high temperature on Friday reduced the average high temperature for the five-day period by 1-degree Fahrenheit.
    • We know that average high temperature from Monday through Friday = 86 degrees Fahrenheit.
    • Hence, average high temperature from Monday through Thursday = 86 + 1 = 87 degrees Fahrenheit.
    • Therefore, high temperature on Friday = (86 x 5) – (87 x 4) = 430 – 348 = 82 degrees Fahrenheit.

Hence, statement 2 is sufficient to answer the question.

Hence, the correct answer is option D.

Answer: D

The Answer is D here.

First of all we can see that choice 1 & choice 2 are giving the same thing that the average temp from Monday to Thursday is 87.

Given M-T avg temp = 87
So we can solve it by the eq
Avg(M to F) = (Avg(M to T)*4 + Friday Temp)/5
So 1 equation and 1 variable, putting the values we can solve for the high temp for Friday.
