Answer should first modify "Elizabeth Cady Stanton"
which only D &E is doing
Now E has She in second part which is wrong
So D it is

This is a test of the tenets of modification and subjunction. One aspect of modification is that the modifier should be immediately placed after the comma. Thus a staunch advocate, an appositive modifier that appropriately describes ECS, should immediately follow the comma after ECS. A, B, and C are straight out. Secondly a suggestion is an apt theme for the present subjunctive mood. The sentence requires to use the base form of the verb be and not should be. So, E is out and D is the right choice

This is probably a sub 600 level question. Answer is an easy D.
A,B & C can be eliminated based on how they start. Between D and E, "a staunch advocate of liberalized divorce laws," is a modifier and hence the "she" after it is unnecessary.

This is in addition to a nice explanation given by Daagh.

Option E creates a Fragment (only subject is given without any verb & verb's object)

In A and E, suggestion/suggesting that drunkenness SHOULD be made is redundant. To SUGGEST something -- all on its own -- implies that it SHOULD be done. Eliminate A and E.

In B and C, suggestion of drunkenness implies that DRUNKENNESS is what Elizabeth Cady Stanton was SUGGESTING. What Elizabeth Cady Stanton suggested was that drunkenness be made sufficient cause for divorce. Quite a different meaning. Eliminate B and C.

The correct answer is D.

"Elizabeth Cady Stanton" should immediately be followed by "a staunch advocate" >> correct modifier
(A),(B) & (C) are out.
Between (D) & (E) , (E) has incorrect usage of "suggesting" with "should be"

Ans : D

In A and E, "suggestion"/"suggesting" "that drunkenness SHOULD be made" is redundant. To SUGGEST something -- all on its own -- implies that it SHOULD be done. Eliminate A and E.

In B and C, "suggestion of drunkenness" implies that DRUNKENNESS is what Elizabeth Cady Stanton was SUGGESTING. What Elizabeth Cady Stanton suggested was "that drunkenness be made sufficient cause" for divorce. Quite a different meaning. Eliminate B and C.

The correct answer is D.

The issues:

1. NOUN+ COMMA+ NOUN
---> In this case the NOUN after COMMA modifies the NOUN before COMMA.
---> The NOUN that modifies the NOUN before COMMA is synonymous to the NOUN modified.

Example:

Mr. Amartya Sen, an economist, has won the novel in economics.

We don't say: Mr. Amartya Sen, as he is an economist, has won the novel in economics.

Learning:
We don't use a clause in the modifier, rather we use NOUN in this case.

==> This kills the options A, B, and C.

2. See the following sentence:

Mr. Amartya Sen, an economist, has won the novel in economics.--> Correct.

Mr. Amartya Sen, an economist, he has won the novel in economics.---> INCORRECT because the subject of the verb "has won" is Amartya Sen, but "he" has been used again to refer to Amartya Sen.

The sentence then read as: Mr. Amartya Sen he has the won novel in economics.

---> This kills the option E.
Answer is D.
