arranging the weights in ascending order:
8,12,32,40,48,62

median will be (32+40)/2 = 36

In order, the weights were 8, 12, 32, 40, 48, 63. The median weight of the packages was the average of the two middle values: (32 + 40)/2 = 16 + 20 = 36 pounds.
