Is it E ?

A. but it was not as highly sophisticated as that of the Maya and was ( Maya is compared with the language )

B. but it was not as highly sophisticated ad the Maya, being ( "but it was" is not required , also "being" is out of place )

C. but, not as highly sophisticated as the Maya's, was ( "was" at the end does'nt go with the rest of the sentence )

D. not as highly sophisticated as that of the Maya, however, being ( "being" is not appropriate here )

E. not as highly sophisticated as the Maya's however, it was ( This is correct )

I'd go with B. A looks good too, but being is the right word to use when giving an explanation (i.e. why it wasn't sophisticated as Maya)

OA is A.

But, I was wondering isn't a language compared to Maya in(A)? (agree with gamecode).
I picked (E) as well

..a written language, but it was not as ......as that of the Maya .....

language is compared to that of ( language of) maya. Thus there is no problem
