Concept tested:
Each, when used before a plural subject changes the subject into singular. This must hence, be followed by a singular verb

A. Each of Henry VIII’s six wives—excluding Jane Seymour, who died in childbirth, and Katherine Parr, who outlived him—were either divorced by Henry or executed by the state.
Subject verb error
B. Excluding Jane Seymour, who died in childbirth, and Katherine Parr, who outlived him, each of Henry VIII’s six wives were either divorced by Henry or executed by the state.
Subject verb error
C. With the exception of Jane Seymour, who died in childbirth, and Katherine Parr, who outlived him, every one of Henry VIII’s six wives were either divorced by Henry or executed by the state.
"everyone" also exhibits similar characterestics. If used before the plural subject it changes the subject to singular.
D. Each of Henry VIII’s six wives—excluding Jane Seymour, who died in childbirth, and Katherine Parr, who outlived him—was either divorced by Henry or executed by the state.
Corrects subject verb error by changing the plural verb "were" to singular verb "was"
E. Divorced by Henry VIII or executed by the state were each of Henry VIII’s six wives, excluding Jane Seymour, who died in childbirth, and Katherine Parr, who outlived him.
Passive voice and awkward construction
