It should be d...but the semi colon before 'increasing' should be replaced with comma.

Earthworms play an essential role in the soil ecosystem, feeding on organic residue and recycling nutrients back into soil; increasing rainwater absorption through soil aeration, soil loosening, and soil tunneling; and promoting flowering, root development, and overall plant health by fertilizing the soil with a unique waste product called castings.

A. increasing rainwater absorption through soil aeration, soil loosening, and soil tunneling; and promoting Correct

B. they increase rainwater absorption through soil aeration, soil loosening, and soil tunneling; and promote "they increase" breaks paralellism

C. they increase rainwater absorption through soil aeration, soil loosening, and soil tunneling and promoting same as above

D. increasing rainwater absorption through soil aeration, soil loosening, and soil tunneling and promoting should be a semi-colon before and

E. increasing rainwater absorption through soil aeration, soil loosening, and soil tunneling, and promoting should be a semi-colon before and

The sentence is: Earthworms play an essential role in the soil ecosystem, A, B, and C. Since B and C have lists in them, we must use semi-colons instead of commas in the main sentence.

A. increasing rainwater absorption through soil aeration, soil loosening, and soil tunneling; and promoting

B. they increase rainwater absorption through soil aeration, soil loosening, and soil tunneling; and promote

C. they increase rainwater absorption through soil aeration, soil loosening, and soil tunneling and promoting

D. increasing rainwater absorption through soil aeration, soil loosening, and soil tunneling and promoting

E. increasing rainwater absorption through soil aeration, soil loosening, and soil tunneling, and promoting

IMO C

Portion of sentence before underline part is an independent clause separated by a ";", hence the portion after ";" must also be an independent clause.

Note: ";" is not included in underline part.

A,D,E are out

B and C are left.

B has a problem of not having an independent clause after ";" (and soil tunneling; and).

C solves both these problems. Word "they" starts an independent clause and "promoting" (and promoting) is parallel to "feeding" (feeding on organic).

Hence C is the answer[/quote]

IMO C
Waiting for the OA.
My point is there should not be and after Semicolon as sentence after semicolon is an independent clause.

IMO E

Idea: Earthworms play essential role by:
    feeding...
which leads to increasing...and thus promoting...

A. increasing rainwater absorption through soil aeration, soil loosening, and soil tunneling; and promoting - We use ';' to connect two independent clauses with fanboys conjunctions, and never with a ',' and 'and'.

B. they increase rainwater absorption through soil aeration, soil loosening, and soil tunneling; and promote - Same issue as in the previous option

C. they increase rainwater absorption through soil aeration, soil loosening, and soil tunneling and promoting - Parallelism issue. Read it as - they increase rain water aborption...and promoting

D. increasing rainwater absorption through soil aeration, soil loosening, and soil tunneling and promoting - these are two independent lists and should be separated with a ', and'

E. increasing rainwater absorption through soil aeration, soil loosening, and soil tunneling, and promoting - Correct choice. ', and' connector for two independent lists

option A looks to be structured correctly.
All elements are parallel. And when multiple elements are being saperated by comma then to maintain parallelism we can use semicolon.

I think C. after ";" it should be an independent sentence. so it should start with they.

One note: Apart from using ';' to separate two ICs, it (;) is also used to separate lists of different types.

Earthworms play an essential role in the soil ecosystem,
feeding on organic residue and recycling nutrients back into soil;
increasing rainwater absorption through soil aeration, soil loosening, and soil tunneling;
and
promoting flowering, root development, and overall plant health by fertilizing the soil with a unique waste product called castings.

VERITAS PREP OFFICIAL SOLUTION:

In analyzing the different decision points in the answers, it is clear that this question is primarily testing sentence construction – you need to make sure the different elements are logically linked with a parallel structure. The original sentence presents a list of participial phrases that convey how the earthworms play an essential role in the soil ecosystem. The first part of that list – “feeding on organic residue and recycling nutrients back into the soil” – is not underlined, so what follows must be parallel to it.

Confusingly, the first part of the list also ends with a semi-colon, which is usually used to link together two independent clauses but can also be used to link complex elements in a series. The two remaining elements of the list are both parallel to the first and linked properly with a second semi-colon, which is appropriate when you are linking together multiple elements that themselves contain commas. As a result, the original (A) is correct.

For (B), two semi-colons are again used, and this requires that three parallel elements be linked together. Since the three elements are clearly not parallel, it is incorrect.

For (C), (D), and (E) there is only one semicolon in the sentence: this means that what follows the semi-colon must be an independent clause linked to the first. For (C), “they increase…and promoting” is illogically linking two parts of the series into one independent clause – they are clearly two separate things that need to be linked back separately to the first. Both (D) and (E) lack a main verb to create a separate independent clause to be linked with the first. Correct answer is (A).

Thanks. Learned a new concept today about use of ";".
