Efforts require a plural verb thus correct S-V usage will be Efforts ---- have, hence it boils down to (D) and (E).

(E) can be rejected as the highlighted part in option (E) is wordy and hence can be rejected, thus correct Answer must be (D)

Imo D

Efforts ---need plural verb have

And since sentence is stating a fact with no tense issues..hence it should preset simple present tense

(A) has not resulted in less bickering between the Demographic and Republican members of the House+--wrong SC ERROr

(B) has not reduced the amount of bickering between Demographic and Republican members of the House-----Wrong , SV error

(C) has not made a significant reduction in the amount of bickering that exists between the Demographic and Republican members of the House----Wrong, SV ERROR

(D) have not significantly reduced the amount of bickering between the Demographic and Republican members of the House---CORRECT

(E) have not been significant in the reduction of the bickering between the Demographic and Republican members of the House+----wrong, tense error

Efforts to gain bipartisan support for an economic stimulus package, a goal of a number of members of Congress, has not resulted in less bickering between the Demographic and Republican members of the House.

Meaning analysis: There is some effort, but from “amazing” sentence construction we can some how understand that this efforts - “less” – have not reduced much argue between two members of the House.

Error analysis: From the first glance at the sentence we notice subject “Efforts” – plural – takes singular verb – “has”. Present perfect is fine, as sentence states the action "efforts" started some time (unknown) in the past and currently going on.We eliminate A, B and C. Construction of (E) is wordy as compared to (D). Idiom between X and Y – used correctly everywhere. I’ve noticed the “the” before Demographic omitted in (B), but to me here it doesn’t play vital role in POE.

(A) has not resulted in less bickering between the Demographic and Republican members of the House

(B) has not reduced the amount of bickering between Demographic and Republican members of the House

(C) has not made a significant reduction in the amount of bickering that exists between the Demographic and Republican members of the House

(D) have not significantly reduced the amount of bickering between the Demographic and Republican members of the House

(E) have not been significant in the reduction of the bickering between the Demographic and Republican members of the House

D is the winner

Official Explanation :

The main verb of this sentence is has not resulted, and its subject is Efforts. Because Efforts is not underlined, it is correct, which means that the verb has not resulted must be conjugated in the plural to match the plural quantity of Efforts. Eliminate (A), (B), and (C) because these choices all contain the helping verb has.

Choice (D) conjugates the verb correctly with the phrase have not significantly reduced and follows the verb with a direct object the amount of bickering.

Choice (E) conjugates the helping verb have correctly but introduces a passive construction with the phrase have not been significant. The correct answer is (D).

Sir,
although the construction of "D" looked superior to the construction of "E",I rejected D because I thought bickering is not a countable noun, so how can we use "AMOUNT" along with it.

Please correct my understanding

Hey, I think you've got it backward. The general rule is that you'll use "amount" if the noun is uncountable ("the amount of pollution in the ocean is increasing') but use "number" if the noun is countable ("the number of toxins in the water is increasing").

Efforts to gain bipartisan support for an economic stimulus package, a goal of a number of members of Congress, has not resulted in less bickering between the Demographic and Republican members of the House.

(A) has not resulted in less bickering between the Demographic and Republican members of the House --> "Efforts" is plural

(B) has not reduced the amount of bickering between Demographic and Republican members of the House --> same as A

(C) has not made a significant reduction in the amount of bickering that exists between the Demographic and Republican members of the House--> same as A

(D) have not significantly reduced the amount of bickering between the Demographic and Republican members of the House --> correct

(E) have not been significant in the reduction of the bickering between the Demographic and Republican members of the House --> verb form of "reduce" is better than noun form of "reduction" i.e. "significantly reduced" is better than "significant in the reduction"
