OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

Project SC Butler: Day 237 Sentence Correction (SC1)

THE PROMPT

Either stocks or bonds have advantages: stocks can increase in value and give investors more income over time, while bonds can not only provide predictable income but also are guarantees of the return of investors' principal.

THE OPTIONS

Quote:
A) Either stocks or bonds have advantages: stocks can increase in value and give investors more income over time, while bonds can not only provide predictable income but also are guarantees of the return of investors' principal.

• meaning and logic error - either is illogical
-- The first clause before the colon indicates that either stocks or bonds, but not both, have advantages.
-- What follows the colon, however, describes advantages of both types of investments.
-- The coordinating conjunction either . . . or is an illogical connector

• parallelism error in not only X but also Y
-- not only marks the beginning of the parallel structure
-- the verb are follows but also.
-- By contrast, not only is flanked by and splits a helping and main verb. Not good.

Incorrect because the structures do not match: . . . can NOT ONLY provide ... BUT ALSO are ...

Corrected by moving the helping verb can to put both verb words after "not only":
. . . bonds not only can provide .. . but also are guarantees

ELIMINATE A

Quote:
B) Both stocks and bonds have advantages: stocks can increase in value and give investors more income over time, while bonds can not only provide predictable income but also guarantee the return of investors' principal.

• I see no errors
• parallelism is maintained by using the helping verb can "once outside." See option C
Correct, can is once outside: ... bonds can || not only provide ABC but also guarantee CDE
KEEP
Quote:
C) Both stocks have advantages and so do bonds: stocks can increase in value and give investors more income over time, while bonds not only can provide predictable income but also guarantee the return of investors' principal.

• In the idiomatic structure BOTH X AND Y, the X and Y elements must be parallel and are not
X = stocks have advantages → → noun-verb order
Y = so do bonds [have advantages] → → verb-noun order
ELIMINATE C

Quote:
D) Advantages are to be had from both stocks and bonds: stocks can increase in value and give investors more income over time, while bonds can not only provide predictable income but also guarantee the return of investors' principal.

• wow that intro is horrible. Advantages are to be had is grammatical, but the phrasing is needlessly passive.
Compared to B? No contest.
ELIMINATE D

Quote:
E) Both stocks and bonds have advantages: stocks can increase in value and give investors more income over time, while bonds can not only provide predictable income but also can guarantee the return of investors' principal.

• parallelism is lacking. The elements are not parallel
X = can NOT ONLY provide
Y = BUT ALSO can guarantee
→ X and Y are not parallel. What follows Y [BUT ALSO helping verb main verb] does not follow X [helping verb NOT ONLY verb].
• the rule for split helping verbs such as can (and for infinitives and prepositions) in the NOT ONLY X BUT ALSO Y structure is once outside, twice inside.
The words "not only" create the beginning boundary of the closed construction.

Correct, can is once outside: . . . bonds can || not only provide ABC but also guarantee CDE||
Correct, can is twice inside: . . . bonds || not only can provide ABC but also can guarantee CDE ||
Wrong, once outside and once inside: . . . bonds can || not only provide ABC but can also guarantee CDE
ELIMINATE E

THE BEST ANSWER IS OPTION B.

NOTES

• COLONS are rarely tested on the GMAT, but just in case
1) whatever comes before the colon must be an independent clause (a sentence with a subject and verb that can stand alone)
2) whatever comes after the colon does not have to be an independent clause, and
3) whatever comes after the colon should expand upon the first part of the sentence

No option contains a colon error.
In option A, in fact, the colon indicates that the second part of the sentence should be logically connected to the first part.

Three major things to note in this SC problem.
1. Use of Either-or
2. Use of Both-and
3. Use of Not only-but also

According to statement meaning, both-and is required. A is clearly out.
Now check for not only- but also idiom, B and D qualifies for this.
But D uses passive construction. So B is correct and error free choice.

My choice is B option

A) Either stocks or bonds have advantages: stocks can increase in value and give investors more income over time, while bonds can not only provide predictable income but also are guarantees of - Incorrect
Not only X but also Y - idiom, x and y should be parallel.
provide income is not parallel with are gurantees

B) Both stocks and bonds have advantages: stocks can increase in value and give investors more income over time, while bonds can not only provide predictable income but also guarantee- Correct

C) Both stocks have advantages and so do bonds: stocks can increase in value and give investors more income over time, while bonds not only can provide predictable income but also guarantee- Incorrect
1) Both stock....so do bonds- Ambiguous
2) Can not only x but also y is correct

D) Advantages are to be had from both stocks and bonds: stocks can increase in value and give investors more income over time, while bonds can not only provide predictable income but also guarantee- Incorrect
Redundant

E) Both stocks and bonds have advantages: stocks can increase in value and give investors more income over time, while bonds can not only provide predictable income but also can guarantee- Incorrect
There is no need to use 'can' again.

E) Both stocks and bonds have advantages: stocks can increase in value and give investors more income over time, while bonds can not only provide predictable income but also can guarantee

Meaning : Stocks and Bonds have advantages. Those are
1. stocks can increase in value and give investors more income over time
2. Bonds can not only provide predictable income but also guarantee the return of investors' principal.
General info about the benefits of stocks and bonds is presented

Error:
Parallelism : not only X....but also Y...
X and Y should be the parallel entities. In original choice error is
A) Either stocks or bonds have advantages: stocks can increase in value and give investors more income over time, while bonds can not only provide predictable income but also are guarantees of
Note that use of Either ..or.. is correct and S-V pair also matches.
But the second part of the sentence (regarding bonds benefits) does'nt convey clear meaning because it is not parallel

B) Both stocks and bonds have advantages: stocks can increase in value and give investors more income over time, while bonds can not only provide predictable income but also guarantee
:-Correct Choice
Both X and Y --> Correctly Used
Correct Use of Parallelism : bonds can not only provide predictable income but also guarantee

C) Both stocks have advantages and so do bonds: stocks can increase in value and give investors more income over time, while bonds not only can provide predictable income but also guarantee
:- Both Stocks??? Original Sentence talks about Stocks and Bonds. The phrase Both Stocks have... distorts the intended meaning (as there are no 2 stocks listed in the original sentence)

D) Advantages are to be had from both stocks and bonds: stocks can increase in value and give investors more income over time, while bonds can not only provide predictable income but also guarantee
:-Parallelism is correctly used in the second part but the start of the sentence is awkward. are to be had (Original sentence provides the general information presented in the simple present tense. Use of Had is altogether wrong)

E) Both stocks and bonds have advantages: stocks can increase in value and give investors more income over time, while bonds can not only provide predictable income but also can guarantee
:- Parallelism Error - not only X but also Y...here X and Y are not parallel. Rest of the construction of the sentence is correct

A) Either stocks or bonds have advantages: stocks can increase in value and give investors more income over time, while bonds can not only provide predictable income but also are guarantees of -- Eliminated. Meaning eror. Both bonds and stocks have distinct advantages. It isn't an either / or.

B) Both stocks and bonds have advantages: stocks can increase in value and give investors more income over time, while bonds can not only provide predictable income but also guarantee -- Correct choice.

C) Both stocks have advantages and so do bonds: stocks can increase in value and give investors more income over time, while bonds not only can provide predictable income but also guarantee --- Eliminated. Unidiomatic. Both X and Y construction seems to be violated here.

D) Advantages are to be had from both stocks and bonds: stocks can increase in value and give investors more income over time, while bonds can not only provide predictable income but also guarantee --- Eliminate. Awkward. Advantages are to be "had". Firstly the verb-tense. Secondly, advantages are to be have from "holding" perhaps? Overall this is awkward.

E) Both stocks and bonds have advantages: stocks can increase in value and give investors more income over time, while bonds can not only provide predictable income but also can guarantee. --- Eliminate. Parallel Construction. Not only X but also Y structure is violated here with Not only X but also can Y.

It took me 1 minute and 8 seconds to choose (B).

For option (A), I noticed that it does not follow parallelism rule for "not only ... but also". Instead of using "are guarantees", it should use verb "guarantee" to be parallel with "provide".

This eliminates (A).

Now, for (E), can appears before "not only" but after "but also". It is also unaccetable.

For (C): "Both stocks have advantages and so do bonds" - At the very least, both should be deleted. This writing is unnecessarily convoluted.

For (D): Passive voice should better be avoided.

That leaves B as the best option.

Its (B) for me.

Either stocks or bonds have advantages: stocks can increase in value and give investors more income over time, while bonds can not only provide predictable income but also are guarantees of the return of investors' principal.

A) Either stocks or bonds have advantages: stocks can increase in value and give investors more income over time, while bonds can not only provide predictable income but also are guarantees of
--> latter part describes both stocks and bonds' advantages. hence either is wrong.

B) Both stocks and bonds have advantages: stocks can increase in value and give investors more income over time, while bonds can not only provide predictable income but also guarantee

C) Both stocks have advantages and so do bonds: stocks can increase in value and give investors more income over time, while bonds not only can provide predictable income but also guarantee
--> two stocks? wrong.

D) Advantages are to be had from both stocks and bonds: stocks can increase in value and give investors more income over time, while bonds can not only provide predictable income but also guarantee
--> passive form not preferred.

E) Both stocks and bonds have advantages: stocks can increase in value and give investors more income over time, while bonds can not only provide predictable income but also can guarantee
--> not only A but also B is wrong here. "can" should be elimited.
