No doubt about A as the correct answer choice....

This sentence tests correct idiomatic usage

1. As much as

2. So X that Y

Employees over 50, vastly enriched by long years of professional experience, contribute as much to the success of an organization as their younger counterparts do, but they are so maligned by a corporate culture that venerates youth, that they often suffer from a loss of job security.

Employees over 50, vastly enriched by long years of professional experience, contribute as much to the success of an organization as their younger counterparts do, but they are so maligned by a corporate culture that venerates youth, thatthey often suffer from a loss of job security.

Further we have the non essential modifier part -

Employees over 50,vastly enriched by long years of professional experience, contribute as much to the success of an organization as their younger counterparts do, but they are so maligned by a corporate culture that venerates youth, that they often suffer from a loss of job security.

Is the usage of they not ambiguous because "their counterparts" is used and their is a possessive pronoun ?

I think that "they" is not ambiguous because of the following:
"They" is maligned by a corporate culture that venerates the youth thus "they" can only refer to the employees over 50.

What if "they are" was not underlined. Would we still use but in that case or would yet also be grammatically correct?
