Energized by its new coaching staff, the team already won twice as many games this year as last year, even though several games still remain to be played this year.

A)already won twice as many games this year as did last year, even though
I believe DID is a typo here.
Even if DID is present, Main sentence is a Fragment rather than a Independent clause. Incorrect

B)has already won twice as many games this year as last year, even if
Use of EVEN IF creates a conditional sentence that is not at all required. Incorrect

C)already won twice as many games this year as it did last year, even if
Use of EVEN IF creates a conditional sentence that is not at all required. Main sentence is a Fragment rather than a Independent clause. Incorrect

D)has already won twice as many games this year as did last year, even though
Correct comparison between the no of games won this year and no of games won last year. Correct

E)has already won twice as many games this year as last year, even though
Incorrect comparison between the no of games won this year and last year. Incorrect

I think option D should not have the "did". Please verify the posted question with the original text.

D) doesn't sound correct , although none of the other options seems correct.

D) almost compares "the team almost won twice" with "the last year won the games"(makes no sense) . It should ideally be "team has already won twice as many games this year as it(team) did last year".

Experts please comment on this one.

This cant be correct... The team has won as many games his year as did last year... means the team and last year won similar number of games?

Hi,
I searched for this question after giving a test on Manhattan - and according to them, the OA is E) and not D).
Can anyone help clarify why is D) wrong and why is E) correct?

From the given sentence, The action (wining games) started in past and continued in present. hence we require present perfect tense instead of past tense. so A C and E ore out. between B and D, B is wrong because of illogical comparison.
Option D must be the correct answer.

Please refer to the following link :
https://www.manhattanprep.com/gmat/foru ... 24229.html

Please help me understand why (E) is preferred, not (D).

[edit**] (D) has already won twice as many games this year as [the team] did(won) last year, even though

Thanks

Energized by its new coaching staff, the team already won twice as many games this year as last year, even though several games still remain to be played this year.

A)already won twice as many games this year as did last year, even though

B)has already won twice as many games this year as last year, even if

C)already won twice as many games this year as it did last year, even if

D)has already won twice as many games this year as did last year, even though
=> who has won?
The team

The team has won as many games this year as last year.

When we write-

The team has won as many games this year as DID last year.

Sounds like-

The team has won as many games this year as last year DID.

Last year did not win any games. It was the team which won games in last year.

So it changes the meaning and hence, Wrong.

E)has already won twice as many games this year as last year, even though

Correct.

The subject "it" is missing from the second parallel element: .." as it did last year". Omitting the subject, but not the verb is awkward. Either keep both, or omit both. (Omitting both is preferred, if the meaning is not obscured.)

Hi sayantanc2k,
Thanks for your response
I have further question.IMO,if we are about to omit something, that thing should present before in the sentence.
Here if we omit both noun and verb, the sentence will read :

(D) has already won twice as many games this year as [the team has already won] last year, even though
"has already won last year" doesn't make any sense...

Please help correct my understanding
Thanks :-)

hi,
although i am also not cleared about OA, but as you have modified the answer D , in this you can't use the team has already won last year, because last year is already an past tense so you can't use has for this . rest i do not understand why D is preferred here .
