You have "by" before case number, you have "by" before victim's last name but no "by" before "the date"..
So, not parallel StrugglingGmat2910.
Hope it's clear now.

nkin , thanks for the heads up.

This whole deal is weird.
I just found an online "peek" into Kaplan 2016, and "either" does not appear in any of the options.

This question was posted in 2017.

The online blog at Kaplan defines either/or as "between two things."

Every editor I know, yours truly included, allows "either/or" only in the case two items.

It looks as if Kaplan editors corrected their mistake.

Let me find out the exact protocol for questions that have changed.
Topic thread merging is at issue.
I want to be certain.

Until then, I will lock this thread.
At the moment it appears that not one of these options is correct.

Every one of the police reports have been filed so that they can be located either by their case number, the date they were created, or the victim's last name.

A)have been filed so that they can be located either by their case number, the date they were created, or the victim's last name

B) have been filed so that they can be located either by their case numbers, the dates they were creaed, or by the victim's last names

C) has been filed so that they can be located either by their case number, the date they were created,or the victim's last name

D) has been filed so that it can be located either by its case number, the date it was created, or the victim's last name

E) has been filed so that it can be located either by its case number, the date it was created, or by the victim's last name -- not an either/or case --incorrect parallel list

D is correct because it makes the most precise parallelism: "either by its case number, the date it was created, or the victim's last name ".

Please Kudos if it helps

Why D is correct?

I find E maintains parallelism in it.
either by X or by Y

Both are correct: In the first case, "by" is outside the parallel structure (hence used once and covers all the three elements), in the latter inside (hence repeated).

According to my knowledge as per E-GMAT, either..or is a dual-word marker .. here in the question the list comprises of 3 elements.

Is my doubt valid?

"Every one of the police reports " will not be tested in the actual gmat; here, Kaplan just wants to confuse test takers.

I fail to understand why E option is not parallel: can anyone explain why it is wrong

Now i understood. I understood E is in this format "by X, (modifies X) or by Y" - Only two branches X and Y.
But the answer needs to be "by X, Y or Z"

Re: Every one of the police reports have been filed so that they [#permalink]
I am going with D. Reason

The structure "every one of the X's" is always singular.
example:-
Every one of us is happy.
Every one of the students is happy.

So left with C, D and E

C) has been filed so that they can be located either by their case number, the date they were created,or the victim's last name. They cannot refer to Everyone. We need IT

D) has been filed so that it can be located either by its case number, the date it was created, or the victim's last name

E) has been filed so that it can be located either by its case number, the date it was created, or by the victim's last name . In E we have 3 things that need to be parallel. case number, the date it was created and the victim's last name. by using "BY" before the victim's last name its makes the sentence not parallel.

Everyone is singular so we need to use ‘has’ and after ‘either by’ we have a perfect parallel structure…..so correct choice is D

Hey Sayantanc

Just to be 100 percent sure

In a sentence

... either by X, Y or Z... is correct and you too agree that the option D has correct parallelism ?

Pls suggest.

Re: Every one of the police reports have been filed so that they [#permalink]
Every one of the police reports have been filed so that they can be located either by their case number, the date they were created, or the victim's last name.

A)have been filed so that they can be located either by their case number, the date they were created, or the victim's last name - Incorrect, Every one is singular and have is used so SV violation

B) have been filed so that they can be located either by their case numbers, the dates they were creaed, or by the victim's last names - Same as Option A

C) has been filed so that they can be located either by their case number, the date they were created,or the victim's last name - Use of they which is plural as incorrect as everyone is singular

D) has been filed so that it can be located either by its case number, the date it was created, or the victim's last name - CORRECT, maintains parallelism as all the three entities 1) Case Number 2) date it was created 3) Victim's last name are parallel and connected commonly by the marker "BY"

E) has been filed so that it can be located either by its case number, the date it was created, or by the victim's last name - Incorrect, violates parallelism as there is by before case number and victim's last name but no by before the date it was created.

Both the structures are correct - 1) BY X,Y,Z 2) either by X or by Y or by Z

So a straight Option D

Re: Every one of the police reports have been filed so that they [#permalink]
IMO, this sentence has an inherent Structural flaw.

In "either X or Y" idiomatic construction, we can place only one list (word/phrase/clause) to replace X/Y. Hence, there has to be a parallelism of two lists (X // Y).

Whereas, in the stated sentence, we have two lists substituting X.
