-- 'accept' wrong usage of word. Hence C cannot be a correct answer choice.

* need, with the exception of certain Spanish translations of books which he
-- Correct usage of words, concise and not awkward. Hence D is a correct answer choice.

D is too wordy to be the correct answer.

Plus "which" without comma is almost wrong.

I go with B. "Except for" is a correct idiom.

Can't be believe it's D. D changes the meaning of the original sentence, "certain" modifies books in the original sentence. There are many books in the library, but needs Spanish tranlations of certain ones. But D makes it sound like there are many different Spanish translations of some books, written by different authors or published by different editors, for example, and we he needs only those that are written or published by certain ones. See how D changes the meaning. D is too much of a meaning change to ever be a right answer on GMAT.

Plus, B is much less wordy.

What's the source.

what is the source of this question?
It seems not a typical GMAT question. Usually, a GMAT question is conformed by just one sentence, this is not the case.

I agree with zest4mba dude....

D modifies the meaning certain which modifies books is shifted to spanish translations, Also when you say the clause in B does not have a subject, I don't know how strong or right is this objection to disqualify the option.

Dude... don't scare us like this!

D says - certain spanish translations of books. that is not correct. this means that he needs some variety of spanish translations (may be spanish and some of its dialects).

We need spanish translations of certain books.

I see two issues with option:

option D:
1] "which" clause is an essential clause that adds certainity to "certain books" that "he will have to request"
2] " with the exception of " is wordy and could be replaced with "except"

option B:
1] "which" clause is an non essential clause and it conflicts with "he will have to request"
2] " except of " is used concisely

I am not sure what should take priority here?
1] correct usage over wordiness as in D
2] modifying the sentence to make the which clause non essential (seems awkward as in option B) and use "except"( concise form)

B is the right answer

a. "except" is a conjunction and rightly used to connect two independent clauses.
b. " with" is a proposition and a propostion can not connect two independent clauses.

A, B and C all have the same mistake.
The "which" is not used properly, it refers back to books, instead of the spanish translations.

E changes the meaning, its not the spanish books, its the TRANSLATIONS

Therefore, the most grammatically correct is the letter D

"Except for" is correct. You will need to memorize a list of idioms from a good SC guide such as Manhattan SC guide.

I do not see any reason to eliminate B. On the other hand, D is surely wrong because "certain Spanish translations" does not make sense.
